I'm so frustrated I hope someone can help. The place that built my computer says I need to bring it in, and of course there is a charge!!

A week ago I got a virus on my computer. Not really sure how, I downloaded spybot from this website and I don't think it was compatable with my Anti Virus Kaspersky. I get a message that I had several Trojan Viruses, since I allowed a site thinking it was something that had to do with the spybot download.
Nothing I can do, my computer will not function at all after that. I decide to wipe everything out and start fresh. After doing that I discover there is no restore disk. The company that built my computer says they don't give one anymore...great!!! So I used the Windows xp home. But guess what no drivers for anything. I call the local company again that built my machine and they tell me again bring it in. An 80 mile round trip plus whatever they will charge to reload drivers. Forget that! I'm not a computer expert by any means but I know enought that I think I can do this myself.
I download Driver Detective, pay for the package as it tells me I'm missing 5 drivers. I download all the drivers they recommend.
I got check and still its telling me that my IDT High Definition Audio is not working. I unistall it and try again, still nothing. I try different drivers from the Intel site Driver Detective sends me to. NOTHING works!!
I have a Intel DG965SS motherboard, and I look that up and download different drivers they recommend. NOTHING, except while downloading I get a message from my Anti Virus that it detects an Trojan.Generic... What???
How from where?? I quarentine that.
I'm ready to start over again and wipe everthing out!! My computer seems to be running slow and seems to be missing things.
Can anyone help me?? Please. Thanks!

It sounds like you may still have some kind of nasty on your PC.
There are two ways to go about this. First, you could go to the Malware Forum here, perform the steps in the Malware Removal Guide, get a clean bill of health from them, and then install your driver or we can install the driver, then clean your PC, which may remove the driver again.

The first step for getting your audio back is to make sure you have the right chipset driver:
Chipset: IntelĀ® Chipset Software Installation Utility for IntelĀ® Desktop Boards

Next, go into Device Manager. Look in Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. Are there any yellow ? or ! there? Also, check in Device Manager>System and in Other Devices for them. If there are either Sigmatel, MS UAA bus driver, or IDT HD, they are all part of your audio. Uninstall them by right clicking on them and choosing uninstall.

In Add/Remove Programs, look for the KB888111 update and uninstall it. (It may have uninstalled in last step)
If you install, remove, and then re-install this update, the update is no longer listed in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Therefore, you cannot remove this update from your computer.
To work around this problem, follow these steps.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click this subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2\KB888111 (it may be in SP3)
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
4. Click Yes, and then exit Registry Editor.
Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_S...ish_d4191.html
Reboot, but don't let Windows install any drivers.
Install your driver, then reboot, again.

The UAA or the IDT HD should be contained in this download.

Thanks for the reply. I followed each step exactly in the Malware Removal Guide and then followed all the steps you listed here.
Rebooted after installing the driver and got the message new hardware installed it gave 3 different descriptions.
Needless to say its not working.

When I go into device manager, there are several things listed under sound.
The Audio Device on HD has always had ! mark by it and does so now as well.
Should I have uninstalled the others listed? Such as Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Device and Media Control Device as well as Video Codecs?

Not sure if this is related but I keep getting a message that Symantec User session has encourtered a problem and needs to close??

Thanks!!

No, they wouldn't need to be uninstalled.

Sometimes, AV (your Norton) apps will interfer with driver installs. Go offline, shut down your AV, and try the steps, starting with uninstalling the drivers again.
When you get to this point: " Reboot, but don't let Windows install any drivers.", if the Hardware Wizard appears, tell it "No" to installing drivers then, install your audio driver yourself.

That did not work either!! And still getting the message symantec user session (whats this) has encountered a problem.

Should I try refomatting the hard drive again?

Symantec is the parent company for Norton Anti-virus software. Do you use Norton?

What are you using to load your OS? A recovery disc or partition, or an XP disc?

Try a couple of things, before you decide to reformat.
KB835221 Hotfix
1. Remove "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" That would be your IDT HD.
(This is for Realtek but Sigmatel and Realtek are very close in the way that they install)
2. Download from Microsoft the KB835221 hotfix and install it: KB835221 Hotfix http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...tem=pv-22533-1
3. Restart the system, and XP will automatically detect the devices
4. After this you should be able to install your driver.

Thanks for all your help!! I found a disk that said installer driver CD...go figure
I loaded the Cd and it had something called Direct x 9 and audio studio. It restarted my pc several times and what do you know it worked. Device manager now shows a Sigma Tel HD Audio?? It only took me all day but its working!!
I do have another question please. When I followed directions for Malware there were directions for enabling hidden files. Do I need to go back and change those do disable?

Thanks again!!

Great.
It sounds like it was the DirectX, that wasn't installed, that kept the driver from installing right.
(Got to keep that in the back of my mind)

Re-hiding the files is just the reverse of un-hiding them.

• Right Click Start.
• Select Explore
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View Tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do Not Show hidden files and folders.
• Check the Hide extensions for known file types option. (if you want to change this)
• Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Click Apply.
• Click OK.

Well glad this might have helped you out also.

So its a good idea to reverse the hidden files?
