A few days ago I installed a Memorex DVD Burner. Problem is, it doesn't seem to burn things properly. Nero, and several other programs, throw an estimated time left of 15 HOURS, and then waiting several hours, the dvd hasn't even begun burning yet!

A few notes: I did NOT use the ribbon OR the sound cord that came with the burner. I left the ones from the old cd-rom in there and just switched it over. Is that what could be causing problems?

I dont know about the cords and stuff, but when I first installed my burner it was projecting times like that. If you have nero, go start>programs>nero>nero toolkit>nero info tool. There is a setting you want called ultra dma. Click on the configuration tab. DMA may not be installed. So, this is how you do that...

    Uninstall the secondary IDE port
To do that, open Device Manager as follows. Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tag, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, right-click on Secondary IDE Channel, click on Uninstall. Deactivating is not enough.

Reboot to make the changes active and permanent.

After booting Windows will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the DVD (or CD) drive. This Plug-n-Play process can take a little while, so give it a minute after the boot process finishes.

    Reactivate DMA
But this is not enough, because unfortunately Windows does not automatically activate DMA on a DVD or CD drive. You have to tell Windows to try to use DMA first.

For that, go to Device Manager again. Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tag, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, double-click on the secondary IDE channel, click on Extended Settings and change the relevant setting from PIO only to DMA when available.

On Windows NT and 2000 you now have to reboot a second time, but Windows XP applies the change instantly. Then you can go to the same place in Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, all is well.

Also, you want to update the firmware of your burner to the latest version.

I think it auto-applied itself after reinstalling, it was set to Ultra DMA 2 without me having to apply anything. Was I to use the primary IDE channel in this case (the burner is master...)

As long as both of them say ultra dma enabled you're good to go!

The primary one still says PIO under Transfer Mode, and it is unchangeable (the option selected is DMA if available).

Should I uninstall the primary ide then?

two entirely different cables on w/ 40 threads one w/ 80(look at them easily identified) the old ones(40) just dont transfer data if at all(amazed it picked it up)

shut down>reinstall cables that came with kit>reboot>enjoy!

For me, when i got my dvd running, i think i had to update my chipset also, so make sure you do that. update firmware too!

Nope, didn't help. The thread count was equal on both cables, and the cpu is still maxed out with exaggerated eta's, and nothing really gets burned anyways.
