I have an asus g75v running windows 7. I had a sony vaio running vista and the mother board went or the video card, im not sure, but id like to connect the internal hard drive to my new computer via usb. I bought a SATA transfer cable to usb. my old hard drive is 500gb Toshiba. When I plug it in, it takes a while, shows that theres a new hard drive as local disk (d).

when I right click on it, it locks up for a while, and after a long time, lets me finally see the right click menu so I can get to the properties. it shows no bytes or anything.

Ive been looking for days on a solution, but I couldn't find anything. if anyone could tell me what I have to do I would REALLY appreciate it.

does the drive still have vista on it? when you right click the drive do you have the option to format the drive? maybe you can use something like minitool partition wizard to delete the drive and then create an ntfs partition on it...what are you going to use the drive for?

yeah the drive should still have vista on it. I have stuff still on there that Id like to be able to go through without transferring everything. id like to be able to just go through the folders and see what I have on there to transfer.

With the Toshiba drive connected, if you go to Start -> Computer does the drive show in Windows Explorer and can you double click it to open it?

it does show it, but even if I select it, it takes a long time to do anything. I can right click on it, but it takes A LONG time to get the drop down menu. I think it actually was running windows 7 on it. It was a sony vaio, the sticker on the computer says vista, but I just found a cd from the vaio for windows 7, and Im pretty sure thats what I remember it being, windows 7.

ok so after waiting about 5 minutes of the "my computer" window not responding it asks if I would like to format it. I do NOT want to do this lol. I'm trying to get my old graphic design projects off of it

It sounds as if the drive is beginning to fail. Run chkdsk /f on it and please post results.

Now my computer isn't booting. It goes to windows boot manager and gives me error 0xc0000185 and then it occasionally goes to windows error recovery which does nothing but try to load windows files and then take me back here. Please help this is worse than not being able to get into my old hdd

i suspect that it has something to do with the fact that i unplugged the old internal hard drive out of the usb without disconnecting but it just kept freezing everytime I tried to do that
