A little guidance please. When I try to access the internet on a regular boot my browsers (opera and Firefox) and email will not connect to Internet but my my instant messaging does. I am using Windows XP with patch 3. I am able to use the browsers and email when I boot up in the safe Mode. Any Ideas????

    Hi

    Couple of likely causes are

    1. Your Firewall is blocking you and when you boot into Safe Mode its not loaded hence you can connect, so what Firewall do you have and in Normal Mode if you disable it can you connect?

    2. You have Malware, so following this guide could help, if not and/or it finds malware in any of the scans then start a new thread in the malware part of the forum and attach the requested logs

When did this start, had you installed any new software before this happened?

    Was this moved?

I get the same issues. I have scanned and cleaned 6 ways to sunday in safe mode and out. Computer is running like a champ, but the browsers, all browsers, will not work in normal start up. I can ping any sight via command prompt, I can FTP through command prompt, and I can ssh into my webserver at my house, but the browsers, email, and Anti-virus updates do not work.

I know there is a slight chance I missed something, but I will keep chugging forward.

This comp also does not have any zone alarm files on it, but the guy used relevantknowledge.com, wefi.com, freeze.com, and other errant ones. Big Myspace junkie. I know, I know.

Thanks for any and all guidance.

    Hi thee_rook

    What was moved?

I woud run the malware guide I posted and start a new thread int he Malware Forum with all the logs requested in the guide and see what the malware experts think.

Zone Alarm is just one Firewall and their are many others so disable whatever Firewall is on that PC, to test outgoing traffic.

Is this PC Windows XP SP3?

Yeah it is a XP pro Media Center edition Gateway w/ SP3 and all the rest of the updates post.

This is weird to say the least for me. I have seen plenty of messed up or corrupted TCP/IP stacks, but this one is stubborn.

I was wondering if this guy moved this forum topic or not to the malware side.

    Thanks,

    Rook

I have narrowed it down to port 80 traffic. https sites work, ut no http sites will.

Is there a master reset on security stuff?
