Whenever I open Internet Explorer I keep getting an error message that says "Internet Explorer has encountered an problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and gives me the option to send the error report or not to send it. I tried downloading Mozilla thinking it might be an Internet Explorer issue but I am still getting the same error message except it says Mozilla.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. And it does the same thing with my SBC Yahoo browser. This is what keeps coming up:
    (Internet Explorer)
    Error Signature
    AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: yshortcut.dll
    ModVer: 2005.11.10.2 Offset: 000058b2

    (Mozilla)
    AppName: mozilla.exe AppVer: 1.7.20060.41421 ModName: gkplugin.dll
    ModVer: 1.7.20060.41421 Offset: 0000a680

I have run all of my anti-spyware (Spybot, Ad-aware) and it initially found the CoolWebSearch trojan and deleted it. I ran Norton Anti-Virus and it did not find anything. I started the computer in safe mode and ran everything again (including Trend Micro's Sysclean). The only thing that keeps coming up is the DSO Exploit in Spybot even though I keep deleting it. I then ran the System File Checker and shut down and restarted my computer but I am having the same problem. The error message keeps popping up everytime I try to open my browser window and then it shuts down my browser.
Can anyone help me get to the bottom of this and what I can do to fix it? Should I try to reinstall Internet Explorer?
I am on Windows XP , IE Version 6
    Thank you.

See if these get IE working. If not the problem is somewhere else.

    Try this to repair IE
    Start/Run/regsvr32 urlmon.dll

    OR

    To reinstall IE
    Start/run/rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

I ran the repair and got this message "Dll Register Server in urlmon.dll succeeded". I tried to open Internet Explorer and got the same error.

Now I am going to try to reinstall it. Do I need the original XP installation disk in order to do this?

Whatever the operating system is. That's the one you will need. If you have XP then it will need the XP cd. If you have XPSP2 then you will either need the XPSP2 cd or one with the SP2 on it. The sp2 could also be located on your hard drive. Just as long as you can point it in the right direction.

Looks like your problem is somewhere else though. :(
