Internet bumps me off on a cable modem!

To explain better, I have Windows XP and Road Runner (cable modem) service. And yes, I still use IE (shame on me). The problem is that whenever I open up my IE window, I get a message saying "You are offline - continue to work offline or connect?" When I click connect, half the time it connects me via cable modem, the other half it starts dialing-up on our 56k modem.

Any ideas of what's going on? I really miss opening my IE and being connected as I should.

Go, in IE, to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections tab and configure to "Never dial a connection". or choose your cable connection as the default and pick "Always dial default connection", if that's how your particular setup works..
