Just reformatted and installed XP on a Dell Inspiron 1525.Doesn't see Internet broadband. Did setup, winsock repair, and all the ipconfig commands. In ipconfig /all all that is returned is Windows IPconfiguration, no other data/info.

This is actually my second install as I thought something went wrong on first.

Have the Dell XP2 install disk, but both times when I installed, I kept getting messages of missing files during install, press escape to continue.

All else seems fine, can even get a wireless signal. No ping though. I must be misssing some driver for the ethernet connection?

    Hi

The message of missing files is not good sign and may need to install again, but try the below first.

In Device Manager what items if any have a yellow ! mark by them?
At a rough guess install the chipset driver then the ethernet/lan driver from Dell HERE (Install the Chipset first and reboot then from the Network menu list and install the Intel and Marvell drivers, then reboot and try)

Also do you have any security software installed yet, if so what? and if a 3rd party firewall, then disable it to test internet as it may not recognise the LAN yet, so may need to add it.

    Thanks Halo,

I've already done two installs so I don't think that will help. AND it is a disk sent to the person directly from Dell.
I will try your other instructions though. Aren't you the one that walked me through a similar issue some months ago with a 98 Dell?
I was confidant somebody would point me right here again. I'll download those and try them out in about 2 hours. I didn't bring the machine back to my office.
Oh there was a yellow flag in the DM but it didn't look internet related and I can't remember now what it did say but if the other thing doesn't work I'll come back with that.
No security software yet. So homepage is set to MG but I first wanted to get the ethernet working. Just Window firewall, absolutely nothing else yet installed.
    Thanks again.

I know double posting is a no no but I went to the Dell site and found the drivers as Halo directed but it won't let me download. I put them in my download selection but when I tell it to download, the page just goes shady, no action.
I rebooted, cleaned out my IE, ran cCleaner, added dell to trusted sites, still no go. IE8 set to medium. Running Vista basic. Never experienced download problem with this machine before. Is it Dell or me?

Got to a different machine, downloaded the stuff, voila! Connected.
    Many thanx!

When you reinstall from a Dell restore disk you also need to reinstall quite a few drivers.
These are on a separate disk (even with windows 7) from the operating system.

The good thing with Dell is that they are always available for free (download).

    I recommend the following order

    Operating System
    Graphics (video)
    Chipset
    Network
    Audio
    Modem

You will need separate downloads for the drivers in each of these categories.

You can also get Dell Diagnostics and some other utilities but these is not essential.

Thank you, it is working again. I just assumed these drivers would be installed from the supplied "drivers" DVD, but Dell does make it pretty easy. In fact, I've got one more driver to find for the audio on the machine.
    Thanks again.
