OK please help me!!! I am running the following machine:

Nvidia AN8 Ultra motherboard, AMD 3700 processor,
1 gig ram, 250 gig SATA harddrive, nvidia 6600 graphics
    card

Windows XP professional SP2 fully patched & upgraded

    Firewall: Sygate
    Antivirus: AVG

My ISP is Telewest Blueyonder Broadband, I have a Motorala SURFboard cable modem SB5101E, it is connected to my PC via an ethernet card built in to my motherboard: I have a 1934 net adapter & Nvidia nforce networking controller these are both enabled.

My broadband works for a few hours but then stops, the four green lights are still on the modem indicating that the modem is still getting a signal & I know it is not my ISP going down as this happens frequently & people in my area who are also with them have no problems.

I have disabled all the power saving features & disabled the enable wake lan thingy in BIOS.

This never happened when I ran thru USB, so it could be my network adapter.
Does any one else have this prob?

I may not have all the correct drivers or have set it up properly

    Please help

    Thanks

    Hey MZPRESTO,
This may be totally offbase but when you listed your motherboard it rang a bell about something I read in another post. I looked at the specs and one of the features is "Native NVIDIA Firewall via NF4 Ultra".
I'm wondering if you have that feature enabled and if it could possibly be conflicting with your connection. I think there are some bugs with that firewall feature and I don't know if it has been fixed yet. There was a thread about that recently and I can't remember what was said.
    You might check that out.
Someone else might have some other ideas I'm sure.

    Thanks for your reply LBMEST,

I don't know how to check if Native NVIDIA Firewall via NF4 Ultra is enabled & if it is how to disable it. It is not in network properties or in system devices. When my connection dies I have tried IPCONFIG /ALL & all my IP numbers & stuff are there as always, but no connection. I type in IPCONFIG /RENEW & it says:

An error has occurred while renewing interface local area connection : unable to contact your DCHP server. Request has timed out.

The only way I can get back online is to reset my modem. I will stay connected for a few hours but then it dies & I have to repeat the process.

Some1 told me maybe I should ask my ISP for a static IP address, but not sure it this will help.

It worked with no problems on my old computer, but I was running it via USB on that one + through a router. This time it is a direct ethernet connection.

If you have anymore suggestions I would be truly grateful

    Thanks

That firewall feature should be in the BIOS also. It's built into the motherboard.
Did the connection drop when the wake on lan feature was enabled or did you change both the power and wake settings at the same time? Might try leaving the power settings disabled and enable the wake on lan.

Can't find anything relating to Nvidia firewall in BIOS & my XP firewall is Disabled, just running Sygate. I have tried the wake seting enabled & disable & get same outcome. Thanks for your help on this, think I'm going to ring my ISP ask them if they can do anything at their end aswell.

Please can someone help me! this is driving me beyond insanity!
Surely someone knows how to fix this!

I have tried 2 different network cards, and 2 different ethernet cables, I only have Sygate firewall running. I never installed the Nvidia firewall, win xp firewall is not running either. When my connection dies all 4 green lights are displayed on my modem to say it is still getting a signal from my ISP. There is also a PC activity light that normally flashes, but when my connection dies it is on Solid. According to blueyonder (isp) they say that would indicate that it is something conflicting on my PC, and as a cop out blame it on my Firewall. I know it is not Sygate as I never had this problem with Sygate before when the modem was connected via USB. It is a clean install, brand new harddrive. XP pro SP2. I followed all the spyware tips on this site, so I have none! I don't know what is causing the connection to drop??? It is random. I can be connected for 2 - 7 hours before it drops. I have disabled ALL power saving options. Please can someone tell me if I could have missed anything?
I read on another site that I could be overloading the modem causing it to drop, I constantly have bitlord 1.1 running (torrent software) could this be knocking out my connection?

I know it is not Sygate, as I never had this problem with Sygate before when the modem was connected via USB.

This is kind of a Strange Logic! Most things work OK until they do not.

It might be an authentication problem cause by switching from the USB to Ethernet, How to Fix Cable/DSL Internet authentication (password).

In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager. Make sure that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall the Network Settings; Log to this page, it have a lot of links to instructions for Windows Network Installation - http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

Thank you very much for your help, I have tried all those steps so I will wait and see if they work. I also found something on another post LBMEST mentions it could be the Nvidia Firewall, I don't have this installed but it got me thinking. I found some surprising information on a Nvidia Forum that would indicate it could be a fault with the motherboard and there are a few people with this problem where all of a sudden the conection drops:

    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=4978

Everybody on the forum seems to have their own opinion, but some1 has the exact same prob as me and says this:

" Hi, I also have a nVidia network problem with BF2.
I have tried everything, net connection is good, no dropped packets, fresh install, No NAM, not heat related, firewall off, bypassed routers, added separate nic,M$ hot fix, affinity 0,updated drivers, nothing fixes this connection problem.
I have been working on this issue for the past 5 months.
If I turn off one cpu on my dual core I have no connection problems.
I cannot live with that solution.
So as of right now the best thing that works for me was to roll back to the 6.65 chipset drivers.
They let me play BF2 between 2 to 3 hours now before I get the connection problems and have to cold boot to get connection working again.
I replaced the nVidia Numerator drivers from the 6.65 pack.
I replaced the nVidia SMBus driver with windows driver
I replaced the nVidia PCI driver with windows driver
This is a nVidia problem as they control the network and it is happening on all nForce4 motherboards.

Somebody at nVidia please help us figure this out. "

what do you make of that? I am new to all this, but coming more & more experienced as I run into probs!

Thanks for your time I will try & keep you posted!

Connection dropped after 6 hours. When my connection drops my LAN properties still say that I am connected & it still shows my IP address, but all internet activity stops and i can't access anything. Have to keep resetting my modem and after resetting it I get straight back online, don't have to reboot my machine. The process will then be repeated a few times a day. It is most bizarre! Can any1 shed any light on this?

I HAVE FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT AFTER 5 MONTHS!!!!!!

OK it has been an emotional 5 months, well just kidding but has been ANNOYING as hell not knowing why my connection just dies. I have tried just about everything and maybe i overlooked the obvious. I constantly run torrent sofware: Bitlord 1.1, I have friends and family who also run this with NO problems, so I just assumed it wouldn't be the culprit.

Out of sheer desperation and at the point of almost giving up I left the Internet on overnight without Bitlord d/l and when I woke up this morning my Internet was still connected!!! This seriously would never have been the case if Bitlord had been running because now my ISP have upgraded my connection I get kicked off after about an hour, 2 if I'm lucky.

My next step is to try and figure out why this is happening. I thought at first it was the tcp/ip settings were xp limits the connections to a maximum of 10, but I have pathced this to 50 and I got kicked off after 20 mins, so didn't help.

It seems to be when I am downloaded @ high speeds and it's almost as if it overloads my modem, which I have now found out my modem has been discontinued (motorola sb5101) I never ever have any connection loss though with anything other than torrents so it is not likely

It could be my ISP seeing what I'm upto & booting me off, but I doubt that aswell because a friend of mine uses the same ISP and has a 24/7 connection. He uses bitcom. I don't know if this client is any good. If any1 can recommend a good 1 that would be good. I don't use the obvious torrent ports either so I doubt it's my ISP + when I ring them they are still sending a signal to my modem.

Has any1 had any similar probs or can any1 explain why this happens?

I am going to try other torrent clients, but I kind of like bitlord we have grown quite attached. Hehe

Re: Bittorrent Kills my Internet Connection

I tried bitcomet and the same thing happens, will randomly disconnect after a few hours and only way I can get back on is to reset my modem.

My friend has the same ISP and uses Bitcomet with no problems. Think he may have a webstar modem.

This only happens with torrents can leave comp on 24/7 and internet still fine when NOT d/l torrents, but if d/l will guarantee connection drops within a few hours.

Maybe it has not been installed properly so there is noise on the line or signal is not getting through properly. How can I check this?

    This is REALLY weird!

    Thanks

    *****PROBLEM SOLVED AFTER 6 MONTHS*****

    *****PROBLEM SOLVED AFTER 6 MONTHS*****

    *****PROBLEM SOLVED AFTER 6 MONTHS*****

I am sooo happy!!! You would not beleive how happy I am!!! I have a SOLID 24/7 connection with NO dropouts on blueyonder! Heres how:

I have something built into my motherboard called a 1394 network adapter. I don't use it, I either use USB or ethernet and had infact already disabled it in Windows XP (or so I thought)

In control panel under network connections I right clicked on the 1394 adapter and clicked disabled and forgot about it. I thought whatever it is I can run fine without it and it can't be conflicting because it's now disabled (I was mistaken)

Last night I was looking for something in my BIOS and came across it: "1394 Adapter" Showing as enabled. I disabled it in BIOS and rebooted and ever since then I have not had a single dropout and my modem logs are much healthier!

I can't beleive it was that simple! Even though it was still showing to be disabled in XP, it was only when I disabled it in BIOS that it had any effect.

I googled: 1394 conflicts and it turns out that it is a known ethernet conflict in XP!

    Truly unbeleivable!

I hope this helps any1 else on here!

    Thanks for all your help!
