Internet connection problem

Hi guys,

I have a problem with my internet connection. I'm currently using a cable modem. I set up the network connection so that it would auto detect my IP etc. But for some reason it doesn't allow me to connect to the internet. On the bottom right corner of the task bar, it says that my connection is up, but whenever I double click internet explorer, the icon flashes showing that my computer is sending packets, but not receiving them. I used the help/support thing windows provides and what the computer said was that I wasn't online since the computer can't detect a default gateway?

Can anyone help me out here?

 

If you have Windows 2000 or XP (or higher) do you have DHCP and DNS services enabled?

What OS are you using?

 

I have Windows XP professional

I think DHCP and DNS services may be the problem because when i opened up a command prompt and typed "ipconfig /all" the results showed that they weren't enabled?

How do I turn them on?

start.. run type services.msc

find services names DHCP client and DNS client .. check to see if it says they are started.. if not, then double click on them and then enable them and start them.

 

They are both started...

 

go to the command prompt and type IPCONFIG /RENEW

 

Okay i did renew. this error message is what i got:

An error has occured while renewing interface local area connection: unable to contact your dhcp server request has times out

turn off your machine.. unplug your modem for 1 minute.. plug it back in and wait for it to run its' tests.. turn on your machine.. try internet again.
