Internet connection sharing and powering down devices

My neighbor has a real good open wifi, but I can only pick it up with my laptop on the window sill of the corner of the apartment. So I pick up the connection there with the laptop and share it over to my PC. But the lap top gets real hot sometimes.

I tried closing the laptop lid to save on power, but I guess the antenna goes up the back because I lost some serious bandwidth. Now I just power down the display. Does anyone know off hand if I can power down any other devices while I'm at it. Or a better question would be, does anyone know what devices I need to keep on to keep the current configuration running well?

    Thanks.
