    Hi,
I have a LAN set up at home, and i am sharing the internet connection across the network.
The client computers show that the internet connection is connected and available under network connections, but i cant connect to the internet, or ping out to anything on the internet.

I can ping all the machines and file sharing ect works fine.

I've done pretty much all i can think of with the tcp/ip settings, but not had any success.

Im really hoping someone can help me with this!

i dont really know what info to list here, so just let me know what info you might need in helping to determine the problem.

    Thanks in advance.

None connect? Not even the one that is sharing through?
Post the ip config for the gateway computer (one they go thru) and one of the non-working computers.

    Start / run / cmd / (type) ipconfig /all

That didnt really help, i dont know if you were pointing me to something specific, but going on all the info there it would appear i have set up the internet connection sharing thing correctly. yet it still doesnt work.

This might seem a stupid question, but do i need to install the internet software (the stuff that came with the modem) on the client machine?

Probably wouldn't hurt, since all else is set properly.

How is your network set up?
What kind of modem do you have?
    What kind of ISP?
How do your machines connect to the router/modem?

How is your network set up? - 3 computers run through an ethernet switch
What kind of modem do you have? - a usb ADSL modem
What kind of ISP? - not quite sure what you mean
How do your machines connect to the router/modem? - ethernet crossover cables.

Let me know if you need me to be more specific about anything.

    Are you in the UK?

Does your switch have an uplink port? If so, are you using both the uplink port and the port adjacent to it?

If you connect one pc to the dsl modem with a straight through cable...does it work?

Wow....I'm really not understanding. The link you sent me of the device does not have a USB interface listed.

I thought you you said you connect to the modem via ethernet crossover cable.

oh, sorry man, got that a bit wrong, was getting really fustrated with the whole thing earlier!

    So to set you straight:
The modem connects to my host machine via usb.
all the machines connect to the network though the ethernet switch i linked you to.

So all connect to the switch? and switch to the router? ....unplug switch and router power cables ...unplug usb/ethernet cables ...wait ...plug in ethernet and then power to all ...see what happens.

    Still a little confused.

One machine connects to the modem via usb....correct?

Now how are the other machines connected? If they are connected to the switch via ethernet cables and then to the host computer via crossover ethernet.....I don't believe that will work.

The only way the configuration, as I have described it, has any hope of working is if the usb connection is set up for Internet sharing and each of your other machines have static IP addresses. In this description the host machine will act as a router.

To verify if the modem connection is working...plug only your host machine into the modem via the usb connection. Does it work?

    Correct.

All the machines are connected to the switch with ethernet crossover cables

The modem connection works fine on the host machine.
The shared internet connection also shows up on the client machine, under network connections, and when i view the properties for the connection, it says that its connected and working fine.
But i cant connect to anything with IE, and i cant ping out to anything on the net.

Ethernet connections to the other computers must NOT be crossover cables! If you connect to another switch or hub you use crossover cable unles the switch device has a switchable MDI/MDI-X port which 3COM usually has.

So, Host to DSL modem USB cable
Host to switch, straight through cable do not connect to the switchable MDI/MDI-X port.
Other machine to switch, straight through cable do not connect to the switchable MDI/MDI-X port.
