    Hi

Does anyone know the best way to network a computer on a network with a router / switch cable modem. I want the users to be able to share files peer to peer but out of the 4 computers only one of them are allowed to have internet access. I believe the 3 computers are xp home it maybe pro though not sure until I check. Thanks

What are you asking here? How to share files? How to deny computers internet access?

Hi thanks for getting back to me, sorry i was not clear.
I have 4 computers on a cable modem with a linkys switch
I want only one of the computers to have both internet and file sharing ability.
the other 3 only to have file sharing ability. I know how to setup file sharing but I do not know how to block internet access. the only way I know how to is to unplug the network cable which of course will interfear with file sharing. thanks

Ahhh, okay! I understand you now.

What I would recommend in this case is setting the internet-restricted machines up with a dummy gateway address. Here's how: (note this requires that you know your router's private IP address)

    1. Right-click 'My Network Places' and select 'Properties'
    2. In the 'Network Connections' window, right-click the network adapter, and select 'Properties'
    3. On the 'Local Area Connection Properties' dialog, highlight 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'
    4. Press the 'Properties' button
    5. On the 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties' dialog, select the radio button next to 'Use The Following IP Address'

Now, you will have to specify a GOOD IP address and Subnet mask, and a INCORRECT Default Gateway address. If you need any help selecting these, post back.

so what your saying is should go on the machine do a ipconfig get the ip address and mask and put that in the tcpip properties and just put any phony gateway address in the field and I will have file sharing and no internet? also the DNS server section i can just leave blank that does not apply? Please let me know thanks

Yes, that's exactly right. Then, only administrative accounts can edit the TCP/IP settings. If you have users on admin accounts, you could group policy the entire dialog out.
