I was recently at a motel in CA, and the following situation occurred. When I tried to connect to the Internet via wired connection my computer showed that I was connected but I was not able to connect to the Internet. I inspected the Status of the connection and it showed an IP address, Gateway, Subnet mask, DHCP address and a DNS address. When I tried to ping 127.0.0.1, I got a reply but when I tried to ping the gateway I got Request timed out. I tried to ping a local host via IP address and via name and the result was Request timed out. I verified that IPsec was not turned on. I ran pathping, and tracert but had no success. ARP showed the gateway and I ran “netsh interface ip delete arpcache” but without any success. Since it was a motel I was not allowed access to their server but I suspected that the ARP Table was corrupted on the router. The IP address it was trying to assign my computer was the same as the IP address of the computer at the front desk. Does anybody have any other suggestions

It's not your equipment, so corrupted ARP table, or mis configured DHCP, etc is rather difficult to deal with. There are usually only a few things you can do. Complain to the front desk, insist they call their support or discount your room. See if you can talk them into rebooting the device (they probably don't know where it is) Find a nearby internet cafe. Bring your own connection if it is critical.

About your only other shot, if it's an IP conflict is jot down the settings you got from DHCP, and set your IP manually, to something else on the same network - you may have to try a time or two. Of course, this sort of thing may have been how the problem started in the first place.

Thanks for the input. I already tried the front desk and they contacted the Ronald McDonald House and threatened to take us off the list. Note: my 9 year old granddaughter has cancer and we are using RMH for motels. I was able to get the connection I needed at the RMH and the hospital so I did not try to push it. I am a licensed technician (MCSA) and offered my services free of charge but was rebuked by the motel manager for the complaint and he refused to allow me to help. His loss is the way I figured it. I tried the manual connections a few times but no success. I will be going back out there the first of the year and will probably stay the same place and I will try the manual connection again. The IP I am getting is 10.10.10.2 and the Gateway is 10.10.10.1.
    Thanks again,
