    Hey (again)
So Ive recently just got my home computer up and running again after replacing the PSU, and i had given it into the local tech shop who said it needed to have windows reinstalled, so they had reformatted without asking us, and I wasnt paying someone to do taht for me so we took it back from them, to find it was a power issue, so when I got it running again, I had to reinstall windows, and after putting on XP SP3 (I get it free from uni), I proceed to install the drivers, and I put on the drivers for the ethernet card and for the Onboard graphics, the onboard graphics one works fine, but the ehternet card doesn't. it shows up as working in the device manager, but will not connect to the internet, but it also says when I select it on device manager that there are no drivers installed. I really really have not got a clue what to do now.

Go to start, run, type in cmd.

In the DOS type box, type in IPconfig /all
    (Space before the /all)

    Post here what you get.

    I get

    Windows IP configuration
    Host Name :home
    Primary Dns Suffix :
    Node Type :Unknown
    IP Routing Enabled :No
    WINS Proxy Enabled :No

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix :
Description :Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
    Physical Address :00-0B-DB-0C-AC-F6
    Dhcp Enabled :Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled :Yes
    Autoconfiguration IP Address :169.254.230.148
    Subnet Mask :255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway :

Thats it. Cheers for the quick response.

That certainly doesn't look right. Open the Properties of your Local Area Connection, click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click Properties. There should be check marks in both the IP and DNS sections to obtain addresses automatically.

    Can you ping?

Again cmd prompt, then type ping www.majorgeeks.com

You should send and receive 4 packets.

Could also uninstall and reinstall your ethernet card driver but first I would disable it, reboot, then reenable, this has worked for me.

Then also at command prompt type ipconfig /release, then reboot and ipconfig /renew

Then try ipconfig /flushdns then type ipconfig /registerdns

Then at cmd type netsh winsock reset catalog

That's pretty much the list of stuff I try and you can't damage anything. You're not wireless I hope. If you are, try cable connection.

Let us know if any of this works.

Shouldn't think so - he hasn't got a gateway specified.

    Earthling,

You're right, (favorite words I'll bet), I didn't see that.

Feel free to get in on this one as the list of stuff/ideas I gave Groin about exhausts my tools for this problem. On the other hand, they have rarely failed me but I'm more than willing to learn more.

I'm having to assume he's using a DHCP enabled router/modem. If the auto settings don't find the gateway we are going to need a bit more info about the kit he's using.

There's a tick in the obtain IP address automagically,. and in the DNS servers one too.

    Surprise Surprise-can't ping.

When I try to disable the ethernet card my device manager just hangs (and has been hanging for about 10 minutes now)

Trying to ipconfig /renew and it says an error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

waiting for any problems with the DNS to shop up in the event viewer.-after about 20 mins i checked the event viewer and realised I dont know what Im looking for in it.

    hrmm.....

yup, im on a cable connection, and all wired. I have a scientific atlanta epc2203 modem, and normally use a netgear RP614v3 router, but since Ive started with this Im only using the modem. I'm connected to the internet through that modem with the PC im posting on here with. THe network card on the problem PC is a broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller. its built into the motherboard of a dell dimension 2350. need any more info?

did cmd type netsh winsock reset catalog

Also, just noticed that when I shut down it gets stuck on windows is shutting down, and I have to pull the plug... but when I restart it shiuts down fine and starts back up again.

Don't know what you think Earthly, but it's starting to sound like corrupt system files. (Can't disable driver, doesn't shut down properly).

I'd rule out malware as it's a fresh format and you haven't been on the net.

As you have install disks, at a cmd prompt again, type sfc /scannow
If there are corrupt files, you'll be asked to insert the DVD to repair.

Seems to me that it's mostly consistent with not having the router connected in the line. It's the router that assigns the IP address and makes the connection to the ISP, so without it the only way a connection can be established is by installing the modem drivers and supplying it with the sign up credentials.

Groinsh0t - why have you disconnected the router?

Just had a quick look at the modem spec - had missed the fact it was cable not phone. However it does have a USB connection as well as Ethernet, so perhaps try that? I'm assuming the modem divers are installed.

Double and tripel and quadrouple checked my cables and connections, even tried swapping around cables and checking them with this machine, all woreking fine and correct. I knew that anyway, because it has the network icon-2pc's, with a red x beside it normally, andwhen I plug it into my modem/router I get a ltitle yellow triangle saying limited or no connectivity. I took out the router because I remembered the pain I had trying to set it up and wanted to get the computer running on the internet as this one doesn't matter that much cos IM away in uni most of the time, but my family use the pc thats OOA. I tried installing the Intel INF utility and then the broadcom drivers-didn't work. I'm digging out my installation CD now to try the sfc /scannow.

I know that it should jsut work if I installed windows XP and then the ethernet drivers and thenc onnect it straight to the modem, as thats how I did it in the first place with both computers, but it just doesn't work now. Will edit my post when I find the disc and try the scan.

For whatever reason your NIC doesn't seem to be functional atm, but what about my suggestion to try a USB connection to the modem?

Sorry aout the delay-was playing in the snow.
USB didn't work. when I installed the drivers from the add new hardware wizard for it through USB it just stayed copyiing the last file, and I left it overnight and was still doing it today. I dont think its the modem, (whatever NIC is) because the same modem works on this computer, but not on the other one.

Sorry, NIC = Network Interface Card - the Ethernet adapter. No more suggestions at present.
