Since installing IE10 my internet doesn't work worth a damn. How can I go back to running version 9? It's on Windows 7 64 bit.

    Thanks,

Internet Explorer 10 is installed as an 'update' rather than as a program or a feature. If you want to "roll back" to IE9, you'll have to take alternative steps.

Thankfully, this process is relatively easy. To remove this update:

    (1) First of all, click on the "Start" button type "Programs and Features" in the search box. Click on the "View installed updates" in the left pane of the menu.
    (2) Go over to the "Uninstall an update" screen and scroll down to the "Microsoft Windows" section. Simply select Internet Explorer 10 and click "Uninstall."
    (3) It usually takes a while until the process comes to an end; so I strongly recommended to avoid stopping or canceling it. A reboot is necessary to complete the removal and restore IE9.

Very Important Note: This reboot is absolutely necessary in order to complete the removal and restore IE9.It usually takes a while until the process comes to an end, so you're I strongly recommended to avoid stopping or canceling it. When you restart, you will have reverted to Internet Explorer 9. The end result would could very well lead to disastrous results.

    Good Luck - COMP

Thanks, I did that. But it didn't help. I tried Chrome and Firefox and they are slow and intermittent too. Maybe its my ISP.

    Thanks again.

If you've uninstalled IE10 and are still having problems, uninstall the Devil's Update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838 <-- note that the possible side-effects of having it installed are much more widespread than those listed there.

I did that, thank you, but no difference.

My ISP says it's not them.

All browsers have the same problem. It can take two minutes to load Google.

Sometimes it's quicker, sometimes a site won't come in at all.

I had a router for wireless service in other parts of the house but I disconnected it at the ISP's suggestion. No difference.

I have an HP Pavilion HPE running Windows 7 home 64 bit edition.

The only change I can think of that I made recently was the installation of software from a 2TB Western Digital external hard drive I bought.

There can be many reasons for a slow internet connection, some within your computer, others upstream. Is it absolutely 100% that everything was fine until you upgraded to IE10 and has not been so since? What sort of connection do you have, cable, phone line, Sky, other? And how is your computer connecting to your router, wifi or Ethernet?

Not 100% certain, no. It has happened in the last week or so, and so was my upgrade. But going back to IE9 hasn't helped. In fact, Gmail keeps telling me it doesn't support my browser.

Last week, the internet went down in my area, and the ISP acknowledged that, fixed it, and now says there is no issue.

It's a cable modem through a wireless router, which is now disconnected, with the ethernet cable going straight to the PC. I won't need to connect the router again until the New Year.

I have Advanced System Care running. I had AVG but I uninstalled it. I'll reinstall it as that didn't help. I run Malwarebytes and Adaware fairly often.

The most likely cause then is that something has affected the speed of your BB connection. Do you know how to get into the router/modem configuration and check the sync speed? If not give us make and model and we'll try and dig up the user manual - unless you have a copy yourself. You access the router config via any browser.

    It's a Motorola SB5101 SURFBoard Cable Modem.

I don't have a manual for that since it belongs to the ISP.

The thing is, the problems are random. Right now I'm working at almost regular speed. This site, and others, are responding normally. It might be that way for an hour, then be slow all afternoon.

Not easy to track a user guide for that model but try typing this into a browser address bar -

    192.168.0.1

Hopefully you will now be asked next for a username and password. Try admin and password

Hopefully you are now in the modem's home page. You may need to do a bit of exploring and as long as you don't actually change any settings you can't do any harm. You are looking for your connection speed which will probably be expresed in Mbps. The modem has a max speed of 38Mbps so what is yours?

EDIT - if the speed is expressed in Kbps 38 would read about 38000

No connection, so I ran the troubleshoot option in Windows. I got this:

    Windows Network Diagnostics Publisher details

    Issues found
Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (192.168.0.1) is not responding Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (192.168.0.1) is not responding Detected
Contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) Completed

Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (192.168.0.1). The computer or service you are trying to reach might be temporarily unavailable.

So it might have something to do with the ISP after all. The first service visit possible is a week Tuesday. They'll send a tech out that day.

You can try one of the internet repair tools posted on MajorGeeks, such as:

    https://www.google.com/url?q=http:/...ds-cse&usg=AFQjCNHyDaK_pb_ZisvXxH3YBQPbxxRvDQ

Or you could go to www.tweaking.com website and download their internet repair tool.

I've used both when things bogged down on me and both resulted in a noticeable improvement in speed of internet surfing, page loading, etc.

Make sure you back up the registry or create a restore point before you run these tools. In the unlikely event that they make things worse you can roll back the changes and at least be no worse off than before you used the tools.

If you are actually posting from the computer we are discussing then there is nothing wrong with the modem but there would seem to be a block of some sort in place to prevent users from accessing the modem configuration. If they are likely to make a charge if it isn't their problem you might want to defer this visit.

I didn't say anything about the modem. The tools I suggested do a lot of simple things that often get overlooked, like flushing the DNS cache, setting max cache entries, resetting HOSTS file, etc. Running the fixes may help and if they don't he can just roll back the changes. What else is he going to do while he waits a week for his ISP support tech to get there? You two seem to be putting a lot of faith in Microsoft's Troubleshooter. How often has it ever solved a problem for you. It's always the same result. "Hey, it's not our bad, so contact your network supervisor, your computer manufacturer, your ISP, your mother, your priest, your doctor, anyone but us".

There's no charge, but things seem to have improved. This afternoon has been almost normal. I have some time to assess the improvements before the visit. Thanks for your help.

I downloaded the software and visited the Tweaking site. A bit beyond my comfort level at the moment. As I said to Earthling, things have improved somewhat, so I'm going to hold off on these options for a while. If things revert back to the way they have been for the last few days, I might take the plunge. Thanks for your help.

That explains why the post made no sense to me. I thought for a minute that you'd lost your mind. ;) My apologies.

You're either a more prudent or a more patient man than I. It's difficult responding to your posts. I get mesmerized by that hopping avatar of yours, like a baby watching a bouncing ball. It's quite entertaining;)
