    Hi,

This is my first post. I am at my wits end. I logged off my computer normally the other night and when I logged back on in the morning, my internet explorer keep on freezing. The page loads and then the screen totally freezes. I am unable to browse, minimize or even close the window. To get out of the window I alt-ctrl-del. I use internet explorer 6. I did get Firefox from a neighbor so I can at least get on-line. I have run Norton, Ad-aware, Spybot and Windows Defender. No viruses, spyware or malware have been found. We have received updates even though explorer is frozen. I did a repair install and still nothing. I have been scouring Microsoft and the web for a solution and have tried a few things but it's still frozen. Help!

Hi Sally, Welcome to Major Geeks.

This won't cure the problem but may help find the cause.

Get the pc to freeze and note the time this happens. Then do the Ctrl+alt+del to get back to windows.

    Start>controlpanel>performance and maintenance>administrative tools>event viewer.

In the explorer like box which open sthere are three logs in the left hand pane.
Open each in turn and look in the right hand pane at the log for just before and at the freeze.

    Post anything interesting back here.

    Studio T -

Under Application there is an Application Hang, Category (101), Event1002. Everything else looks normal in all of the other categories except under Internet Explorer, it is completely blank. Does this mean anything?

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    Try this

    start>run>typein
    cmd

at the > prompt in the black window that opens typein

    netsh winsock reset

By the way what version of Windows do you have?

I did what you said and no luck. My ISP also had me try "netsh int ip reset rlog.txt" - not with the quotes of course.

Have you tried a system restore to a time when it was working?

I did try a system restore as well as a repair installation of windows. Everything else seems to be working fine but I am getting close to wiping my hard drive and starting over this coming weekend!

Unfortunately IE is so bound up with Windows that you can't just uninstall and reinstall it so a full reinstall may be the best way.
Save your drivers folders somewhere else if you don't have a drivers cd.
You will also need the service packs. These can be got from MG in a large download of 300MB+. This is actually easier than trying the same from msoft itself - there are many tales of woe with big downloads from them.
Sorry I dont have the link to hand look for autopatcher - full.
