I am running an Intel P4, on Windows XP SP2 home edition OS.

There are several major problems I am having. The first being; when I visit some sites computer works fine and allows me to surf as normal. Then without rhyme nor reason, I can be surfing another site like the BBC.co.uk or manchesteronline.co.uk (and plenty of other sites). I can log on to them no problem but as soon as I start to click on the links the egg timer appears as normal then at the top of my browser, I get a Internet Explorer (not responding). The mouse remains active on the screen, but is unable to to click on any of the active buttons including refresh, stop or back. The only thing it can work on is the close (red x).

The other problem, is the email. i use Microsoft Office Outlok Express 2003. Yet some times I cannot send or receive emails. I get a pop3 error. I have contacted my ISP who assures me my sttings are correct. This is bourne out by the fact that when I reboot my pc I can then send/recieve for a short while.

My volume icon next to my clock is missing. When I tried to replace it using MS help instructions it wont let me. I get an error message telling me to install the volume control program from add/remove programs. But the volume trouble shooter works fine.

I know this is long-winded but I dont do shorthand. I have completed to the last letter yourREAD ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: guide.
The part I could not complete was the online scan at BITDEFENDER. I could not get it to load and install. Also the Ad-Aware VX2 Cleaner plug in. i installed it but don't know what else to do with it. I have installed and used all the other tools you recommmended all to no avail. However, they did uncover a few viruses.

Thanks for your help in advance

If this is a malware related issue then you are in the wrong forum. You need to post in the Spyware Specific forum.

Try this for your Volume Icon:

Go to Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Volume Tab under Device Volume, put a check in the box that reads: Place volume icon in the taskbar.

    If that has been tried:

Place your XP CD in then go to Start/Run and type in:
    EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32

Once done: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 stobject.dll

    Lastly, run this edit: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/netvol.reg

Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Thanks for the advice, but sadly to no avail. The message I get is "Windows cannot display the Volume Control on the Taskbar because the Volume Control has not been installed. To install use add/remove program in control panel."

So I followed this advice and still the above message came up. I then uninstalled the C-Media 3D and installed it again through the Microsft web site. The above message still appears! So I cannot control my volume through the normal process.

Further more, despite the assistance I got through this site forum, i still cannot get IE6 to operate normally. So you think I should uninstall and reinstall IE6? The thing is I cannot find it in add/remove programs. Do you know where else I can look to replace it? If that is the better alternative.

Microsoft Outlook is also not performing properly. So I inserted the office 2003 disk and asked it to perform repairs. It got so far then decided it could not continue. So the only way i can get Outlook to work is by keeping the disk in the hard drive!

    Please help me!

Yup, IE5 was the last version that could be really uninstalled. IE6 is the herpes of the computer world - once you've got it, you can never get totally rid of it (well maybe with some M$ unapproved methods)... ;) . Try downloading IE6SP1 and installing over the current version - should have been done already for security reasons.

What I can't understand is why anyone is still using IE/OE when such great and much more secure tools exist: Mozilla (or Firefox/Thunderbird), Opera (now 100% free), Eudora, Pegasus, etc. etc... Apparently even the plethora of evidence as to the swiss cheese nature of IE/OE can't motivate some to switch - must be the same group that believes OJ was innocent or that the current "Global Warming" is a significantly man-made phenomenon (or even unusual in historical terms)...

. Sounds like your system needs a purge of spyware/malware/viruses/etc. too. You can DL a malware removal tool from the M$ web site that gets rid of a lot of the more recent nasties. You can also DL a DOS bootable AV disk set from http://www.trendmicro.com. It needs 7 or more blank, formatted floppy diskettes (one with a bootable system on it) and I think there is a way to put it on CD as well. Check their site. Then there is the Win version of the "Ultimate Boot CD" that comes with a plethora of cleaning tools - the good thing is is that it boots into a very thin version of XP that stays clean because the CD can't be written to.
. I would suggest DLing the downloadables and creating your diskettes or CDs on a KNOWN-CLEAN computer, as there is no sense taking a chance on picking up yet more nasties.

Unfortunately, when Win XP gets really eaten up with nasties, all that remains is to try to back up the data you want to save, wipe the drive and start over from scratch.

Installing IE6SP1 won't fix your problem, you are running SP2. Try reinstalling SP2.
