I upgraded to IE 7 on Windows XP computer. Before the upgrade I could get on the internet just fine. After the upgrade, I click the icon for IE7 and it starts to come up. It does not open and goes back to the desktop. I went to the control panel to check the internet options and the icon is no longer labeled.

I did a system restore to get back to IE6, but it keeps telling me to update to IE7.

Did this sequence twice with the same results.
    :confused

can you start internet explorer by going to task manager and go to "File" "new task" and enter in iexplore.exe? Also..if this goes well I don't see why deleting that shortcut on your desktop and creating a new one wouldn't work, let us know how you get on.

See what others have to say, these were just a couple thoughts of things to try..

What firewall are you running? You may have to go in to the firewall programs section and give the Generic Host Process for Win32 services permission to access the intranet etc.

I tried going to Task Manager and start IE7 with the iexplore.exe. It did the same thing, acted like it was going to come up and then closed. I am running Windows Firewall (I know.....not a good choice). I disabled the firewall and tried again to get on the internet, still nothing

You could try uninstalling it through Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs, then run a cleaner like CCLeaner, reboot and try reinstalling it with a clean download.

Have you added or changed any other software, Microsoft updates, or settings pertaining to internet connection? Do other internet applications work e.g. Messenger?

You should also consider getting a better quality firewall, such as Zonealarm or Comodo, to name but two free apps.

I uninstalled IE7 thru the control panel. I ran CCleaner and then rebooted. I reinstalled IE7 and it is still doing the same thing.

I forgot to mention that other internet apps work. I have not installed anything new.

Do you have another browser installed, like Firefox, Kameleon etc, and if so do any of those work?

I think you problem is still with the installation of IE7, as IE6 works. What version of XP are you using....SP1, 2 or 3 and is is Pro, Media, Home edition etc? This might help to narrow down recognized installation issues alongside the platform you are using.

I do not have another browser installed. I am using XP Home with SP2. I don't know if I said it before, but I really appreciate your help on this. I will try once again to uninstall and reinstall and see if that helps, just in case I missed something last time.

OK, sorry I missed that. I thought he was just asking for the info. I will try to install Firefox and see if that works. Once again, sorry for the misunderstanding.

I got Firefox downloaded and can get on the internet through it. I have also uninstalled IE7 and went to the download file through Microsoft. Still nothing

OK..so it is your IE7 download and/or installation. Let's back up a little bit.

When you say you "click the icon" is this an icon on your desktop or through the START menu? Try clicking the START menu and then right-clicking the IE7 icon and choose Run As and then from the window that pops up select "The following User" and check Administrator. Let me know what happens.

Please confirm that you have never had IE7 actually fully open, and therefore no add-ons have been activated yet. Please also describe what you mean by "acts like it is going to come up"...how far has it ever gotten?

When you disabled the firewall did ANYTHING change at all?
