    Hello! I need your help...
My laptop has Windows XP Home, Service Pack 3. I used the Internet Explorer 7, which worked fine. Unfortunately the PC had been attacked by a Sasan worm, which caused me a lot of problems, so I took the PC to a service and it was reinstalled. Now there is no malware left, but unfortunately now I have Internet Explorer 6.0, which is so much worse, with only one window and no searching toolbar, etc. After the reinstallation there has been some automatic Microsoft update, and it wanted to download the IE 7, but it didn't manage. Since then I tried to download it manually several times, and after installing it I always get an error message, that it couldn't be installed, and I should restart the computer to delete the changes. I don't understand why I can't get it run. :-( There is a new link on the desktop, IE help, and I clicked on it and tried different things to solve the problem. (Windows Update page, then scanning with "Windows Live OneCare", then Clean Startup, but none of them brought the success. So I still have IE 6.0.

Do you guys have a tip what to do? I hope you can help me.

    Thanks in advance!

    Dear Mark,

Thanks for your quick reply and help and suggestion.

Yes, that's where I tried before. I did check again in My Computer, that I have XP Home Edition, 2002, Service Pack 3, Pentium 4.
So I click on the download, I choose "save the file", and as I DL-ed it a few times before, it asks me whether I want to overwrite the existing file. I click yes, it DLs it again, then comes "unpacking of files", then IE7 welcomes you, I accept the licence conditions, and I agree with the automatic update (I tried it with automatic update checked and also unchecked before), then it says IE7 installation, but at the end it still says "The IE7 installation didn't finish. You need to restart your PC to delete the changes made by the installation." That's what I got before all the time.

At the first time I was in panic, because the PC was really damaged - in My computer if I clicked on C: or D: driver, it couldn't open it, because "a script file missing" (or dll file), and also by CTRL+ALT+DEL the "task manager" didn't work, I couldn't click on it. And I got an error message that there is a virus on the PC which gets all of my personal data, passwords, credit card numbers. So I took it to the service, they reinstalled it and sold me a Panda Antivirus, but 2 weeks later the PC got reinfected by an USB pendrive. And then the service told me they couldn't do more, I should check the internet about this worm - that's when I found MajorGeeks. I followed the advices on the Malware Removal Forum, it took me about 6 hours :) I did manage to clean the PC, the My computer-clicking worked again, but when I posted the results (logs) to MajorGeeks, the expert told me one didn't run through, it was not complete, and we tried some other ways, but at the end he said some files were missing from my Windows, probably lost by the first reinstallation. That's when I took the PC to another repair service, and I got it back safely - but with IE 6.0. I didn't dare to do the format and reinstallation on my own...

I am not familiar with Mozilla FF, I am used to IE... But you're not the first who says it's better. Does it also have "Favourites" where I can save the links to my fave sites? And can I also open "more windows in one screen" when I can just switch from one to the other (I hope you know what I mean - it doesn't work by IE6, but it's good by IE7)? If yes, I'll surely download it. But it still makes me angry and also worried, why IE7 wouldn't work...

    Thanks! :wave

    Dear Mark,

I downloaded Mozella Firefox and I'll use this browser in the future instead of IE7.

I went to the link above and tried to run sfc/scannow. It asked me for my Windows XP CD, but when I put in the one I have, it said error - not the proper disc. When I bought this laptop about 3 years ago, Windows XP was installed on it (legally!) and I got a CD which says: Medion - Product Recovery CD-ROM, Windows XP Home Edition SP1. The guy in the repair service told me, it was the right CD to reinstall Windows. But somehow sfc didn't wanna accept it, so I needed to stop the program.
You say there are some problems which clearly exist on my OS (?) - do you think I should go back to a repair service and have it checked, or will it be working fine for me for the next 1-2 years even with these problems?

I do have one other question about Firefox though. If I want to open a page, I write for example "www.goo"... - and in the IE6 (IE7) there was a box where I could scroll down to the link which I was searching for (the links used in the last 20-25 days). Now if I do the same in Firefox, it does not only show me the link, but above the link the name of the homepage (I hope you know what I mean...). Is there a way where I can adjust, that it only shows the links, without the names? It's a bit confusing for me now.

    Have a nice week,
    thanks for your help,

    Anikó
