Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage - only on long running transactions

In the past few days I've started running into 'page not found' errors on longer running transactions. Once it hits 10-12 seconds of waiting I get the page not found message.

For some of these sites I wouldn't expect to get a response within 10-12seconds (for example: updating pricing on our remote web site can take 2-3 minutes) - and never had this issue before.

I'm running IE 8, Windows 7 on a 64-bit laptop. Updates occur automatically. So it's possible a recent update triggered the problem.

I tried flushing DNS - no improvement.

Are there settings that control this?

Could this be anything caused by ISP changes? I'm getting the same issue on other PC's running XP Pro and IE 7.

We use a 'business class' cable connection via road runner from Time-warner.

    Thoughts please...

    Thanks, Jeff

I managed to solve the issue. One of the recent software downloads had inserted a receivetimeout= parameter set for 10 seconds (dword=10000 - it's seconds x 1000) in the registry. Removing this entry and the problem went away.

I'm not 100% sure which download is the culprit, but I think it's a Microsoft XML or SQL upgrade download. Nice it left trash in the registry.

    Hi Jeff

Cheers for the update and fix, what was if I can ask you, was the exact path in the registry Hives that this value was present?

Curious as I may come across this in the future and its nice to know the location/path etc

I tried to find my notes on the update - I scribbled them down as I made the change in case I needed to put that info back - but I must have thrown the paper away.

From memory (which isn't always very good), it was under HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings - although I can't be 100% sure.
