All of a sudden today I am getting the following message when trying to connect to a secure site (ie. online banking, facebook, work email)

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
    What you can try:
    Diagnose Connection Problems

    More information

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

    •Internet connectivity has been lost.
    •The website is temporarily unavailable.
•The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.

    etc.....

I was also getting the same message using Safari. Also, my laptop which access the internet via the modem on this computer is having the same problem.

    I did the following:
    - reset internet options (deleting cookies, temp files, etc..)
    - uninstalled Safari
    - downloaded Internet Explorer 8

Do you have any other suggestions??

    Thanks !

I did all the things on that list and even tried the System Restore. Still can't go to any secure site to login.

Any other suggestions? I really appreciate the help.

You might try this for I.E. - under advanced internet options/security, deselect the following items if present:

Check for publisher's certificate revocations / Check for server certificates revocations / Enable integrated Windows authentication

If it helps, it will give you a starting point to figuring out what actually caused the problem.

Also, I've known Norton internet security suites to cause this issue . . . but It has been a while since I've dealt with Symantec products.

Hope this is of some use.

Thanks I tried doing that and still having the same problem. I am using Norton Anti-virus but don't have Norton Security.

Also, why would this just start happening out of the blue, I've had this set up for years.

Is it a concern that my laptop is also doing this? (not allowing me to go to secure websites). I ran spybot to look for spyware.

My laptop is Vista and has AVG on it.

    Thanks

    Problem solved.

Turned out to be a setting in K9 Web Protection that was causing this. Here is the solution in case anyone needs it.

    ***************************************

The K9 team has discovered an issue in the K9 rating service which may cause some HTTPS (encrypted) traffic to be temporarily miscategorized. As a result, K9 may have blocked HTTPS traffic for a short time.

This issue has now been resolved.

However, K9 on your computer may have "cached" (saved) the incorrect rating and will keep it for 5 days before looking up the correct rating from our rating service.

To correct this issue, please do the following:

    1. Click the link below (or enter it manually into a web browser on the affected computer):

    http://127.0.0.1:2372/about

    2. Click Show Advanced Information at the bottom of the page.

    3. Under the Filtering Stats column, click the Cache hits link.

    4. Log in with your administrative password. (If you forgot your administrative password, please see the paragraph below beginning with "Alternatively").

    5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page

    6. Click the Clear cache link

After performing these steps, K9 will be forced to retrieve the new rating from our database.

Alternatively (if you forgot your K9 password), you can force your cache to clear by setting your system time forward one week, rebooting your computer, browsing to the HTTPS sites that were having the problem, then setting your system clock back to the proper time.

    Thank you,
    K9 Support Team
