Internet explorer chrashes on launch

I A helping my friend with a problem he has with his internet explorer, Whenever it is launched a message pops up that says that internet explorer is not responding. I Have tried disabling addons one by one, when I disabled one called Avast online security explorer did not crash anymore. I do not know why Avast is causing explorer to crash. I thought it might have been malware but after posting in the malware forum, I now know it is not that. My friend would like to keep Avast enabled so if anyone can help with this it would be mutch appreciated.

He has widows 7 64 bit and Internet Explorer 11

What version of avast! is the machine running? The most current free version is 2014 9.0.2013.292 - the latest paid version is located here. I'd check to make sure the avast! program is updated in case there have been patches to address your symptoms.

There have been problems with avast! meshing with IE - for example, this recent thread. You might consider browsing the avast! forums for similar symptoms as yours and seeing if there are any solutions available.

And, of course there are other trusted antivirus solutions that may work well with that machine - many of them free.

I believe its the most recent version of Avast

I have browsed the Avast forums, but I have not found anything that relates to the problem my friend is having

I would recommend that to my friend, but he has paid for Avast, I'll still ask him if he wants to do it, which AV would you recommend?

I have tried Firefox and there is no problem with it, but I do not think the Avast plugin is installed on Firefox.

 

I Have spoken with my friend and he has decided to remove Avast! and install a different antivirus in its place, I don't know much about antivirus software so if you could point me in the right direction, my friend would like a freeware antivirus that he won't have to pay for at the end of a trial period.
