Internet Explorer - How do I Prioritize webpages?

    Happy New Year

When I click on a hyperlink (and a new window opens) I usually want to keep looking at the original webpage, but IE "prioritizes" the newly opened window and displays it while I am trying to read the original page.

How do I change my settings so that the newly opened/opening webpage stays in the background while I continue to view the original page?

    Thanks :)

I think any browser is going to behave similarly. When you click on a hyperlink, it is assumed you want to view the associated page upon clicking on its link, whether it's in a new window or not. Can you give an example of an instance where the opposite is true?

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my original post.

Another example? Can't think of one. But I don't recall IE being so obtrusive...(I reset to default settings a month or two ago, and it seems to be more annoying now.)

I understand that IE opens and displays the new window when the hyperlink is clicked....but I'll click back to the original window...and view or type or scroll over some information...and 5-10 seconds later the linked page pops up again. So I have to go back to the original again (at that point, the linked page doesn't pop again).

OK. That's slightly different than your original description. It sounded like you wanted all new windows to automatically "pop under", but you are actually clicking back to the original window, and having the new window spontaneously pop over. I have occasionally seen this with Mozilla, but only in rare instances. I think it seems to happens when I quickly switch back to the original window before the new window has fully loaded. Do you see this only occasionally, as well, or consistently? Or is it always with certain sites, and not others?

Wow...thanks for your questions....they let me sit back and think for a moment...and I tested to see if it was just 1 or all the sites.....I was so frustrated that I hadn't tried experimenting to see when/where it happened...

From what I can tell, it's amazon.com that's causing the problem. Spent an inordinate amount of time checking items on amazon today...and that's the site that keeps popping up when I open/change the window.

I'll post again if I see it elsewhere. Thankfully I didn't need to change any settings, just needed a little psychotherapy. :)

You may want to consider using FireFox. The tab browser extension for it lets you assign focus the way you describe.
