When I log on to my home computer using my login i.d. and then open Intenet Explorer, it takes me to my homepage (Google) for a split second, and then flashes to a page that says "Invalid Syntax Error," and the url changes to "http:///". It will not let me change the url, and no pages will open. However, when I log onto the same computer using my husband's login i.d., everything works fine. I have run AdAware, Spybot, CWShredder, and a virus scan, and nothing is coming up. I also use Spyware Blaster.

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal
If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis as a .txt file attachment to your message. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

I did everything in steps 1-4 in the sticky thread, but the problem is not fixed. Here is my HijackThis log.

The problem has miraculously been solved. Who knows why, but everything works fine now. Thanks for your help.

I don't think so! See the stuff I have below and let's see. Winpack.exe can cause the problem you were having.

Do you know what this Advantage program is? It has one process running and is loaded at startup. The lines from your HJT log are:
    C:\Program Files\Advantage\Advantage.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Advantage Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Advantage\Advantage.exe"
If you do not know what it is, there is a good chance we should fix it too. But I'll wait to see what you know about it first. The below items should definitely be fixed.

Make sure you have system restore disabled and viewing of hidden files enabled (per the tutorial).
Please bring up Task Manager by hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL and click the Processes tab. Look for the below process(es) and if found, End them:
    C:\WINXP\System32\winpack.exe
Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mstime] C:\WINXP\System32\mstime.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winpack] C:\WINXP\System32\winpack.exe
    O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab

Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINXP\System32\winpack.exe
    C:\WINXP\System32\mstime.exe

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

You were right. The next time I started the computer, the problem was back. I did everything you said, including removing the Advantage program, with the exception of one thing. When I booted in safe mode and went to remove the C:\WINXP\System32\mstime.exe, it wasn't there. There was an mstime.dll, but I wasn't sure if I should remove that or not, so I left it. Should I go back and delete it? I am posting a new HJT log. Everything seems to be working fine now.
