Right click My Computer, select Explore. Click on + in front of C, then + in front of Program Files then click on Internet Explorer.
In the right pane, what happens when you click on iexplore.exe?

Yet another option: Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections tab; make sure everything is UNCHECKED in this tab, then > Advanced tab > click "Restore advanced settings" and then click the "Reset..." button just below it. This commonly fixes many IE problems. Also, check out these:

    I hope this helps!

@ thisisu: great little app there! I'll have to try it out next time I have a troublesome IE at work. I personally don't use IE at home unless absolutely necessary....

After you click on Internet Explorer you should see icons in the right pane. Do these appear?
If so find iexplore.exe and left click on it. This should open Internet Explorer.

If you do not see the iexplore.exe icon, please list what folders and icons you do see in the right pane of the window.

@ mgjruss: did you try the first part of my post above (I left out the "LAN settings" step by mistake; sorry :-o ) :
Since you're running XP, you should be able to uninstall IE8 via Add/Remove Programs if all else fails, then re-install it.

You could try Dial-A-Fix and check all the boxes in the right-hand section. It doesn't fix any problems in IE8, but it just might fix something that's causing your problem if it's unrelated to IE itself. Running Dial-A-Fix certainly won't hurt anything. Any errors you get will likely be because it will report that it "doesn't recognize the Internet Explorer version" or something similar, and you'll get 8 or 10 of these messages; just click OK and let it do its thing (it may appear to lock up on a file called initpki but don't worry, it's normal for Dial-A-Fix to sit on this file for some time)

    Good Luck!

Thanks a lot. I did everything you guys suggested and even the Dial-A-Fix. Initially after running the Dial-A-Fix it seem to have accomplished nothing. Therefore I proceeded to install IE. After my attempt to uninstall IE I was instructed to reboot the computer. After rebooting, I noticed that the IE icon was still on my desktop. I click on it and it worked. Thank you again.

I was going to suggest in downloading IE9 over IE8 to see if that works.
