internet explorer not working

I looked at a few similar threads but no help. My question is when i click to open explorer a download screen pops up saying name:navcal type: unknown file type, 2.04kb from: c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll . I cancel download then i go to control panel and my internet properties isn't there, well its there but no heading under the little world symbol. When i click it it doesn't open. I tried to reinstall windows but it says my cd-rom isn't there when it reboots to start the process and now when i turn my computer on it takes me to a prompt screen to choose xp professional or xp professional setup any help would be appreciated.

From what I read in your post above, you're trying to install Windows and you're not going to try to repair your Internet Explorer problem, which may be a good idea actually.... when you're trying to install WinXP from the CD, you need to check the PC's setup (aka BIOS or CMOS) to make sure the CD drive is set for the first boot device. Many PC's use F2 at power up to enter BIOS setup; some use Del, some use F10; it varies. Look for Boot Order or maybe Boot Device Priority and set the CD first, and the hard drive second. Be sure to save your changes and restart the PC. If the XP CD is in the drive, you should see "Press any key to boot from CD..." and you'll press any key. Then the blue XP setup screens should come up; press Enter at the first screen where you have a choice (DO NOT press "R"). You can press "R" at the second screen if you want to repair the current install, or press ESC for a clean install (format the hard drive and wipe out all data)... this should be enough to get you started.
