Internet Explorer not working

Hi,

I have been barraged by spyware recently and have several times used the fine tutorial I found here (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407) to rid myself of them. The last time I tried I had to go through the steps several times till I was successful. But a side effect of this success is that my Internet Explorer does not work. FireFox works fine, Outlook works fine, but IE doesn't. I wish I could stick just to FireFox but there are quite a few sites (especially Israeli ones) that don't work with it.
When I try to use IE now, it simply says 'cannot find server' and 'the page cannot be displayed' as if it does not realize i am connected to the internet.

I have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (possibly the update to SP2 was concurrent with the above mentioned spyware cleanup so could possibly be a cause for the problem with IE), and IE 6.0.29.

Any other program, I would uninstall and reinstall but I could not find a way to do that.

Any ideas?
