I have windows xp and the latest internet explorer
version, 6.0 with sp1. My computer runs very fast with
everything else that is on my computer (programs and
files) but when I open internet explorer, every thing
takes longer than dial-up to load. I have a cable modem
and according to the provider, the connection is good (did
a ping test) and the modem is transfering info as fast as
it should. I have run Spy-bot and Ad-aware removal
programs and I have Norton Firewall and Antivirus
protection and have found no viruses. The spyware removal
systems did find numerous spywares on my system, but after
removing them it has made no difference. Any info to help
me would be greatly appreciated, as my wife is getting
    unhappy with (me) it.

Only internet explorer is slow. Other programs (ie. outlook express, other programs, files etc.) open and work fine. But anytime I open explorer to browse, it takes for ever for websites to open, even my homepage. It takes way longer than dial-up to get a webpage open.

Actually I have been on cable for two plus years. It all started doing this about two weeks ago. I had downloaded an updated version of Real player right around the time it started acting up but I was also away from home for 4 days after I did that and hadn't been on the computer directly after that. I have a 16 yr old boy that may have been downloading stuff as well but not sure.

X-man, might I suggest temporarily disabling the Norton firewall to see if that makes a difference...

I'll try it when I get home this afternoon. I appreciate al the help, it may get his mom off my back;) . What will disabling the firewall do for me?

Sometimes a firewall that's mis-configured can limit good access (your surfing) as well as the bad stuff, so for troubleshooting connectivity issues it helps to temporarily take it out of the equation to see if that makes a difference. But only temporarily since you're not protected when it's disabled. Might not help but we'll see.

Hi, with a firewall you have control of what internet traffic you allow access to your ports.

so disabling the firewall will lose you that control

And as alanc says only temporarily

Also once firewall is enabled again run AV again just to make sure no badies sliped in whist your ports where open

OK, I tried the Panda virus check and the SpyBot advanced and found nothing new for the spyware and no viruses. This isn't sounding good is it? I disabled the firewall as well and it made no positive effects either. Any other suggestions? I appreciate the help you have been providing.

Just a thought, your XP firewall is turned off, right? (control panel>network and internet connections>network connections>highlight the connection you're troubleshooting>in the left hand pane of the window choose "change settings of this connection">click the "advanced" tab>if the box for "internet connection firewall" is checked, uncheck it.) It's a dumb idea I know, but maybe you should check it out.
Maybe also check out the slider in your "privacy" settings. (control panel>"network and internet connections">"intenet options">under "privacy" tab make sure the slider is set to "medium")

I have used the Ad-Aware program as well. In fact, I have used Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Norton AV, Trend Micro, Panda, Cache cleaner and PC Cleaner to check for viruses, spyware and other abnormalities. I'm getting frustrated as I am getting nowhere on it. I have not checked to see if the XP firewall is active though. I was unable to do the http://www.trojanscan.com check as the site was undergoing some updates. Any other ideas? :(

If you have your XP CD, insert it at the prompt.

If not you might consider buying it...
