    Hi Insomniac,
I tried various fixes for my IE 6 and had various results but none successful.
My first attempt was to go to add/remove programs and use the repair feature. Unfortunately, IE 6.0 is not in my add/remove programs. So I then tried sfc /scannow, and it asked me for my XP Pro disk, but I have XP Home. Then I used IEfix, and it asked for the XP CD with SP2. There is a nice workaround for this SP2 missing from the CD at http://www.wintotal.de/Tipps/Eintrag.php?TID=636
    however, this didn't work either.
How can I reinstall IE 6 if I can't first remove it? Will it do anything positve just to go to microsoft and download over the first one?
My IE 6 has been showing a blank face for reputable important websites.
    Thanks.

To "uninstall" Internet Explorer, please do the following:

    1. Open Add/Remove Programs
    2. Hit Alt+w (or click 'Windows Components')
    3. Scroll down and uncheck the box next to 'Internet Explorer'
    4. Press 'Next'

This will cause windows to "uninstall" IE. I put this is quotes because IE will still be on your system. To reinstall, perform the same steps as above, only check the box this time around. You may require your XP cd.

It's not in add/remove programs ....you have to go to add/remove windows components.:)

    Thanks Mada Milty!

Life could be so easy if you know what you're doing. Unfortunately, IE6 was not checked, but something called MSN Explorer was checked. Could this be the culprit? Earlier today I got a pop-up that said IE was not my browser, which sort of surprised me, since a few days ago, I received the message that I was using IE compatible with mozilla. In this case, should I uncheck MSN Explorer and check IE?

I wouldn't expect MSN Explorer to be the cause of your problem, but if you're not using it, why let it consume resources on your system? Just my opinion. You can try using this method to re-install IE, but I wonder what has caused it to NOT be there in the first place! If you find that this doesn't help your situation, I would recommend that you uninstall it, and download the setup file from this link.

Thanks! I will try that Mada,
interesting though ... when I hit the link in your e-mail, I got a blank browser screen. When I hit the same link in here which you put under "this link", I had no problem getting to it. It's weird. While I'm in here, if I push on Info, it says I'm in IE 6.0 so why it's unchecked under Add/Remove Windows Components I don't know. If I simply install from the website you gave me, it should overwrite the version I'm using now, shouldn't it?
I will report back what happens.

    Hi Mada,
I went to windows component, unchecked ie6 (I checked it last night before I shut down the computer) and ran the "deinstall", then went to the website you listed. I downloaded the install program for ie6/sp1 and when I tried to intall it, it gave the message that it couldn't install this, because the version of ie6 I have on the computer is newer than the one I'm asking to install.
Now I'm out of ideas. Is there any other way to deinstall it besides add/remove programs? I had this problem once with an old driver boasting it was the newest driver and not being able to do anything beyond that point except to reformat, but that was long ago with a WIN 98 computer. Any other ideas how I can get my ie6 back in order? I installed firefox last week, but haven't tried it. Do you think I should just give up on IE altogether?

personally i would recommend ditching IE in favor of Firefox because IE is insecure BUT you will find the odd website that cant use firefox to display properly, but in my experience its a rare occasion.

I will try firefox. Is there any way to protect my Bookmarks. Is it enough if I copy them away from the local settings folder? That star next to them has always mystified me a bit, because it seems to have different properties attached to it than a normal folder.

    FIREFOX- if the "bugs"
fixed already then i go to it

So in my side i will recomend the OPERA 9
you can import/export Bookmarks from any other browser

I highly recommend Firefox as well, but a working installation of Internet Explorer is still essential as Void mentioned; there are tons of sites designed with IE specific code. I'm not sure what bug infoseeker is talking about. The cut and paste hotkeys have always worked perfectly for me.

However, you shouldn't worry about your bookmarks. The first time Firefox is run, it will ask you if you'd like to import your bookmarks from IE. If you say yes, Firefox will automatically copy all your bookmarks into a folder called 'From Internet Explorer' on the 'Bookmarks' menu.

Also, once you do have a working IE install, you can get an extension for Firefox called IETab, which will let you open a tab in Firefox that uses the IE engine. This will allow you to execute all the proprietary IE code right in Firefox. I use this to do online scans, and Microsoft updates.

    abri :) ... <--- happy firefox user

When I tried my test site that I kept going back to to see if IE6 was working (T-mobile.de), I got a request from firefox to download a plugin. That might be what I needed for IE6 as well, except all I got was a blank page.

thanks for all the helpful suggestion. I will try the IE tab when I need it. I've e-mailed the url to myself. To be honest, I'm afraid to try it anymore. lol

Okay, a continuation of my Browser Saga. I backclicked on a website this morning to get back to an earlier page and I guess I clicked back too fast or too far, because Firefox blinked and disappeared. It was like arriving at preconception, whatever exists before Start Page. It disappeared from Windows Explorer and the links wouldn't reawaken it. I decided just to reboot and there it was again. Is this like a premonition of imminent death of the computer?
