Internet Explorer tool bars black(s/b gray)

The tool bars at the top of the page of Internet Explorer are black instead of gray. The very top bar (address bar) is OK, but underneath what you would call the menu bars (I guess that is the proper terminology) are black and you can't read the menu items since the text is black. I had a problem with Avast which I have now uninstalled (using the uninstall tool in safe mode) and have switched to Avira. I had hoped this would eliminate the problem, but it's still there. Any ideas what could be causing this?

This is one of those things that make you go hmmmmm. Mine was set at "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer". I changed it to Best Performance and nothing happened (toolbars still black). So, I changed it to Best Appearance and it fixed the problem, but changed my visual effects to the new Windows style. However, I prefer the Classic Windows view. Once I reset all that and opened Internet Explorer back up, the problem was solved. I hope this slightly possessed computer will actually save the setting when I shut it down. If it doesn't, at least I know how to fix it. Thank you so much for your help!!

 

Any idea how to get my system to save the setting when I shut down? I booted up today and the black toolbars are back. Thanks!
