I am trying to fix our work computer and am really frustrated. The problem started several months ago with the browser button no longer working. We use sbcglobal dsl. All background applications that use the internet still worked fine you just couldn't get on the internet to check email or search the web. We process credit cards on line etc. So at least that part was still working. One of the girls at work likes to use the internet in between clients and downloaded her aol onto the computer so as to be able to use the web. This was fine as she used her own account and it got the web back up. This worked fine for several months. When I went in last Saturday the internet did not work at all I can no longer process the credit cards from the clients. I am unsure if the is is a virus or if I need to take the internet program off completely and reinstall it. I am coming to you guys/gals first as I am always trying to fix something on a computer either for myself or someone else with no computer experience at all. I usually tend to frustrate myself trying to find the answers by myself. I am hoping someone can give me a place to start and go from there. As I can't get on the internet at work I need to post from home try something at work and come back to this if it doesn't work. Any Suggestions?

I also disconnected the wireless router that we had as the power cord where it plugs into the wall, broke. As this is a fire hazard I disconnected the wireless router and rerouted the internet cord back to the dsl router directly. I forgot about this until now. DO I need to do something in the actual computer to turn off the wireless router? Could this be the cause of the problem?

if the computer is configured to take the wireless connection still, it could be, but it should still pick up the hardwired connection. and even if it was the problem, it should be stopping ie from opening, it should just give u a "page cannot be displayed" message. you can do a quick IE6 Maintence by typeing:
"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance" without the "" into the run box and that could fix your problems with IE6 not opening, if it does, (which it should) u can then point your brower in the direction of your modem , and re-entering your log-in info.

    Hope it helps

Out of curiosity, do you have an IP address? This can also cause some issues.

Fixed my problem. Thank You. One of the errors was my own stupidity when I disconnected the wireless router, because I did not originally install it, I needed to move the dsl line to the other jack. I deleted the program for the wireless router and reinstalled the internet program and everything is now back up and running. Thank you for your time in helping me.
