I recently uninstalled Gator software as suggested by the Gator company and downloaded Handy Password. Since then (2 days ago), my Internet Explorer gives me an error every time I close it: Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience...

I spent hours online with Dell to no avail...just kept getting additional errors. I tried updating my Internet Explorer but ended up doing a system restore because the new version kept telling me the web pages I was trying to access weren't safe, among other things.

I don't want to do a restore back to last week because I will lose my Handy Password data that I just downloaded.

When I click more info. on this error if refers to something C:\DOCUME\..............appcombat.txt.

    PLEASE HELP!!!

Could be IE security settings need adjusting to access the sites you want to see - but take care and ensure that your Firewall and AV programs are up and running if you do lower those security settings.
That said, the first thing I would do is have a looksee at the apcombat.txt file you are referring to. It should open in notepad.

Gator is adware. (Now known as GAIN - Gator Advertisement Information Network) I would not be surprised if Handy Password (which they presumably referred you to?) is a less than scrupulous as well. I recommend that you run through the instructions in the malware removal thread.

Gator adware is so well put together that it probably has its own Add/Remove programs feature.. so uninstall it that way first. Then I would scan your computer with Ad-aware SE 6 and Spybot S&D. If you know what you're doing, then i'd go into regedit and delete "Gator" and "GAIN" entries found, if any. Then you might want to run Lexun RegScrub XP .. just my 2cents..

And don't fall for things like that in the future, if you don't want additional software, don't install it. There are ways to get around having to install some 3rd party program that will most likely become a major pest to anyone with some nerve.

Since I did the System Restore, I am now back to the 6.0 version of Internet Explorer so don't need to worry about security settings anymore... I did search for the appcombat file both manually and through several searches but nothing came up... I know I've dealt with this error before on other computers - just can't remember what the fix was.

as mada milty said, gator, gain, handy pwd are all adware. don't use 'em. if you want something to help keep your passwords and fill 'em in automatically, try roboform. small, clean, works.
