Internet Explorer

I have a laptop running XP. I have a Motorla 5100 surfboard modem which I installed as a USB cable modem (long story but there was a good reason to install it this way). I uninstalled the driver and was attempting to re-connect to the modem via the network adaptor on the laptop, (which had worked just fine before I changed to the USB driver). Now Explorer will not find the LAN connection, and keeps returning with the 'page unavailible' screen. The computer will find the modem, but no matter what I do I cannot get internet explorer to find the LAN connection. I have tried to repair the connection in network connections, and it says the repair is successful, but still explorer will not find the internet. The other strange thing is that when I select a page to browse, it takes about 3 seconds before the page loading in the status bar comes up.

Any suggestions thankfully received

 

Couple things

I'd use the Network plug RJ45, is a little better than USB.

Reset your surfboard, most have reset, mine is little hole in the back. I just stick paper clip in it. Or unplug all cables, power, etc. for few minutes & reconnect.

Then, Tools, Internet Options/Connections, click on Lan settings, make sure box is checked "Automatically detect settings" OK

Last are ya running Firewall, if not ya should, XP SP2 has one built in.
If your using SP2's firewall, go to Control pannel/Windows firewall/Advanced make sure Local area connection box is checked.

 

Thanks for the tip. What had actually happened was that the Motorola software had assigned an IP address in the TCP/IP protocol, and for some reason I was missing it when I looked at it.

Thanks for the advice on the firewall - I've been hesitant to get SP2 because of bad press I've seen - would you recommend it ??
