First off I know NOTHING about how these sort of things work on computer, so would be very grateful if someone knows anything at all about what the problem is, thank you.

On one of my relatives computers, her computer connects to the internet no problem, but after a few minutes everytime she clicks on ANY link to any website, a box comes up saying something like Performed Illegal Error, and when we go to click this box off it takes the internet screen boxs off so we can not carry on with surfing the internet.

It doesn't turn the connection off, it just gets rid of the open screen and back to desktop, meaning we have to get the screen back and find where we were again.

Any thoughts would be excellent. It's a dial up 56k connection, internet explorer, windows 98, old computer lol.

    Thank You.

Some more detail is required here:

What are the exact details of the error message that you get?
Can you start Internet Explorer after an error has occurred? If so, does clicking on a link repeat the error?
Which version of Internet Explorer are you using?
Do you have the current updates from Windows Update?
Would you consider using another browser such as FireFox?

    Okay.

    IExplore

This Programe has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If problem persists, contact the vendor.

Then when I click on details it shows Fault in module MSVCIRT.DLL and a load of numbers.

It doesn't switch of the internet connection, just closes the explorer windows and have to start again opening them and getting back to wherever you are on a website.

It happens on most links that I click on. I tried to download an ad blocker on the computer but the error box keeps coming up and I can't download it.

An old one, have no idea, the computer is Windows 98 and a very old computer it is.

To find out the version of Internet Explorer select the Help menu and then the About option. Tell me what this says.

MSVCIRT.DLL is a Microsoft Visual C++ Run-time library and on my Windows 98 system is at version 6.00.8168.0 compatible with Internet Explorer 6. I would recommend that you use Windows Update to update your system and if you need Internet Explorer, to install Internet Explorer version 6.
