My brother's just recently gone online (complete newbie) and he's asked me if there's a decent (and preferably free) content filtering program he can use to stop his kids seeing anything unsuitable.

I haven't got kids, but I know a lot of you have, can you give any suggestions please?

He's running Win 98 and accessing the net on IE5 over cable/broadband.

    Cheers

Ok... Here I come.. stepping on to my soapbox as a father...

There is no substitute for parental supervision..
Keep the computer in the living room or somewhere else other than a bedroom. Set the rules and should something come up that is inappropriate, discuss it...

Software can never be a substitute. Many will filter out whitehouse.gov because it contains "hate speech" etc. etc...

INVHO putting software like that shows very little trust of the kids, who will probably get past it anyway..

    Ok, I'm done..

<---- steps off of soapbox, turns and walks away hoping not to offend anyone, just sharing opinions

    P.s. Here are several programs:

You could upgrade to IE6 and use the Content Advisor feature. Don't know anything about it as I don't use IE at all, but I think it'll do what you want.

content advisor only works with pages that are coded as such. It doesn't do a search on the page for certain words or anything.

Cheers for that guys, I'll pass the info onto my brother...

...then talk him through every step of finding one, downloading one, installing it and then configuring it.

he could always look into some kind of logging and just search thru the logs every now and then.....

i totally agree with exeter_acres, even tho i am 15 and have no parenting experience whatsoever! Having said that i do have a computer in my room.....:$ ....... but me and my parents trust each other and its more likley that i find that THEY have been looking up dodgey stuff that i have. LOL only the other week i found 2 different viruses on their computer because of smutsurfing.........tch!
