    Hi all,

I'm having issues with this computer I have. Internet Options has apparently disappeared from the control panel, when you try to access Internet Options from Internet Explorer, I get an "access denied" error. I've tried various things to restore them but to know avail.

    - I've tried doing a repair install. However when I select the drive (durring windows setup) a "repair install" is not listed as an option.

    - I've ran chkdsk /f /r from the command prompt and while it did fix some errors, Internet Options is still missing

-I've ran sfc /scannow with the windows CD in the drive, no results.

-I've tried a hotfix from Microsoft for folderOptions.

    - out of the sake of "might as well.." I've ran virus and spyware scans and found nothing

Do you get an access denied error in a command line: click Start>run then type inetcpl.cpl

If you go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 the file inetcpl.cpl is not in the folder?

I'm not sure where to go from here I'm just trying to get an idea of the situation.

I think I would try to expand a copy of inetcpl.cpl from the Windows Cd and see if that works.

Which service Pack is your XP? I'll see if I can upload an SP2 or SP3 version. Are you running IE& or IE8? (I'd rather see if just putting the file in your system32 folder works then mess with reinstalling IE, as I see that only works for a small percentage of people)

If you browse your XP CD do you see a file that starts with inetcpl in the i386 folder? To verify that it is compressed. A compressed file will end in "_"

System is Service Pack 3 for XP and IE version is 8

Well, my XP machine is very old and isn't connected to the internet as I just use it to jog my memory on how XP works. I have an XP SP3 copy of the inetcpl.cpl but it was for IE6. I upgraded to IE8 on that PC and that appears to have been successful but the version of inetcpl did not change. So I am guessing that there is no difference between that file for IE8 and IE6 and it may be part of XPs installation rather than IE's installation. I have a attached it to this post along with the accompanying dll.

You could place just the .cpl file in System32 and see if you can run it. If it doesn't run than maybe there are more files missing or malware involved.
