Internet port busy or invalid

    I'm running Windows 98SE and can't connect to the internet. When I start AOL I get an error message that says the port is busy or invalid. On COM4 now ; switched to COM3 and got same error message. I hope that someone can help me because I have so many problems with this computer I feel overwhelmed; decided I just needed to tackle one at a time. Crossing my fingers!
