Doesn't it feel great when everything seems to be working? Unfortunately things aren't always perfect and that's why im writing this. This problem (at least to me) does not seem to have a simple solution.

It seems each time i download a file from msn messenger or upload one to a friend my internet connection just STOPS. It just dies... and my ip address changes to 124.0.0.0 This also occurs when i try to play a game online via msn. I have no other trouble playing or downloading except with msn. When i disable my lan connection (i connect to the internet via my wired D-Link 604+ Adsl router) and reanable it i sometimes get one of windows registered ip addresses i.e. 169.254.197.72. I'm running windows 2000 so when i check my log file i see this

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Dhcp
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1007
    Date: 6/30/2004
    Time: 12:59:23 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: ANDREW
    Description:

Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address 000ACD06F975. The IP address being used is 169.254.197.72.

    Data:
    0000: 00 00 00 00 ....

Why is my computer just randomly assigning me an IP address that i dont want?

i connect to my router via the address 192.168.0.1 and irrelevant if the internet is working or not, i should be able to connect to it should'nt i? Not only that but when i disconnect from the network and reconnect i find my ip address has changed to 127.0.0.1 which is not right. It is when i get this ip address that i cannot access my router or the net. To find my ip address i run cmd and type ping andrew (andrew being my computer name).

When my computer is working normally no matter how many times i disconnect and reconnect i am still given the same ip address. The only current workaround for this porblem is to shutdown my pc and start it up again. This *only* happens when i donwload or uplaod a file from msn messenger. My current thought is that when msn experiences this *crash* some service is disabled preventing me from connecting to the network. However downloading everything else is normal. My d link router has a firewall i think but i doubt this is the problem as i never altered its settings and everything i download is normal.

Further more when i run ms dos and type ipconfig /release it tells me the ip address has already been released, when i type ipconfig /renew its says: The following error occurred when renewing adapter Local Area Connection: DHCP Server unreachable.

I tried restarting the DHCP service via net start and the administrative tools called services in the control panel but to no avail. Sometimes i must shutdown and restart a couple of times before i manage to get my original ip address (192.168.0.2) back.
I use windows 2000 with service pack 4
I have the latest msn version 6.2
I use ad-aware 6, spybot, hijack this, bazooka and BHO demon so am pretty damn certain that there isnt a single piece of spyware on my pc.
System mechanic 4 has made sure my registry is in order
Norton anti virus business server edition makes sure there are no viruses

I doubt the rest of the specifications are relevant but here goes:
    1.7Ghz
    256mb ram
    40gb hdd
Network card: ADMtek AN983 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet adapter
    126Kb ISDN
D link wireless ADSL router ( i connect to it using a cable )

If you need more infomration please ask and thank u for ur time and help

This is hard to diagnose from afar. Have you made sure there is no firmware update for your router and have you tried to reset it (turned off, waited, turned on) or reset its settings? I cant help but think the router is at fault, but there is no easy way to be sure without seeing it unless someone else here has had this problem.

also, check your event viewer to make sure there are no DHCP errors.

i'm sorry these log files are so long if there is a way i can shorten them without getting rid of the useful infomration plz tell me

The first log says the local interface will be disabled. What does this mean and how can i reanable it? As for the firmware update i'm still trying to find one. I live in Bahrain which is miles away from ne of you guys. so getting suport isnt always easy im looking for the correct version as so i dont mess n e thing up

    thanks

ok, what you need to do is make a scope. In your router, change the starting DHCP address to one that is above that IP address. for instance. if I had an IP of 192.168.1.100 and it was causing the headache.. change the starting DHCP address to 192.168.1.101 and any pc that is on DHCP will be assigned a new IP above that IP address. It sounds like you have a manual IP address entered into one of your PC's somewhere.

You can do the above (assuming there was a reason for the manual IP) or you can find the PC that has the manual IP and remove it in lieu of DHCP.

Updating the firmware on my router is proving difficult and not for the reasons the average person would think. it appears i have to update it on my brothers machine for some bazarre reason. My brohter being the little annoying sh*t that he is won't let me touch it, neither will he let me remove all the spyware and viruses lagging his computer, call it what u like i call him stubborn. Dont get me wrong i love the guy but he can get annoying. i'll do it tomorrow when he's at school.

Ne way about the scope thing there's this option on my router that says ethernet ip address and i can change the ip address of the router which is 192.168.0.1 to practically n e thing i want yeah. for example can i change it to 193.198.0.1?

My computers internal ip address is 192.168.0.2 and my borhters is 192.168.0.3 so changing the routers address shold change ours to 193.198.0.2 and .3 respectively right?

im just confused as to why msn would just randomly change my ip address.

Also sometimes on my brothers pc because he's running xp he gets a notification that there is a conflicting ip address in the network. this is strange because when i do ping andrew i get 192.168.0.2 and when i do ping mario i get 192.168.0.3, the routers address is 192.168.0.1 and my dad's who rarely uses the network and connects wirelessly is 192.168.0.4. so why does it say there is a conflicted ip address? wierd :(

your DHCP configuration looks fine. I would start by shutting down all the computers on the network and working only with yours. Start it up and check the ip address using ipconfig /all at a command prompt. The information should match up with the information above. Then test your machine and try to perform the downloads etc. that cause problems. If you still have a problem, then try setting your machine's ip manually outside the scope of the router i.e. 192.168.0.34. Make sure you alse enter the gateway/router addres and the 2 DNS servers. Restart your machine and run the test again. If they still fail, I would possibly suspect your network card or the installation. You might try uninstalling the devices and then reinstalling or actually using a different card.

If you're getting a conflicting IP address, then there's a good chance that another PC has that IP address already and THAT has nothing to do with the router. That is a network qeury. Is this a wireless router by chance?

after bout a year i was talking to a friend on msn and simply fixed the problem. Basically the problem was when i tried to do a file transfer via msn my internet connection was lost and everything messed up.

The reason for this? Basically my router had closed the ports that msn uses to transfer files. It is configured this way for a security reasons. MSN uses ports 6891 to 6900 enbaling these ports allowed me to solve the problem.

Thanx for everyone and there help and i hope this helps others
