    Hi

What is the exact model of the Dell Laptop and what Windows version are you using, I will guess at Windows 7?

I'm first off thinking that its a power saving feature that needs adjusting and to check try this in Device Manager click and open Network Adapters and then double click your Wireless hardware, to open its properties, then click the Advanced tab and click Transmit Power and choose the Highest setting, also do this for Wireless Mode, choose the highest setting.

then open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and then click Change Plan Settings next to the main option you have (personally I have it set to Balanced) then click Change Advanced Power Settings, click Wireless Adapter Settings and then set them to say my settings of

On Battery - Medium Power Setting
    Plugged in - Maximum Performance

Reboot and see how you go.

Also what security applications do you have installed, please name all?
