Internet Problems Since New Canon Printer

I just installed a new Canon MP170 printer and immediately I'm having trouble on the internet. What I'm getting is "page not found" on everything I've tried except Google. Once I restart my system (Windows '98 first edition) all is fine. After browsing for a while, the page not found recurs. This has happened twice. I talked to Canon techie who said this must be just a coincidence and that something must be amiss with my system as the printer could not cause this. Once learning of my OS, though, he advised to up-grade to Windows '98 second ed. (he claims $20 or so at Office Depot) as my edition is not the best for this printer.
As for the newer edition, I thought I read somewhere that it is not advisable to do this. Regarding the problem itself, I'm wondering if someone might have a fix or another recommendation.

All modern printer like the mp170 (that is a fine printer btw) are best suited to newer operating systems.

I remember selling an epson printer to this lady who keep on bringing it back saying it wasnt working in the end it turned out she had windows 98 1st edition that was why it didnt work.

But that being said i have never heard of a printer causing internet problems .

Have you tried uninstalling the pixma software?

No I haven't tried uninstalling pixma. What is envolved with that? Wouldn't this affect printer operation? Thanx!

Before you uninstall if you go into the pixma program and turn off the live updates and canon web parts then try the internet.

    What's in there is:

    Cannon MP170
    readme
    uninstall
    Canon Manual
    Canon Utilities
    Easy Photo
    MP Nav (for scaning)

After a little testing, I've found that while I have 2 USB connectors on my Windows '98 computer, one for the internet and now one for my new printer, there apparently isn't enough support for both. Whenever I'm on the internet and turn on the printer, it kills the internet connection. Then, when I turn the printer off, the internet connection is immediately restored. Does anyone have a cheap fix for this. While I do want to buy a new PC, I'd like to wait until Vista is available.

If the modem can be installed via Ethernet, that would solve it. Otherwise if you wish to continue using USB, get a Powered USB hub, due to sounds like you are pulling too much from the USB hub on the computer.

I have no Ethernet conection, unfortunately. This powered USB hub, what does it cost, and where can I buy it?

Ethernet cards and USB hubs cost the same. I would put the modem on a Ethernet card, due to it prioitizes traffic over any other device.

    Thanks! I'll check it out.

I should rephrase my earlier statement. When a modem or any other communications device is on a USB hub, it will prioritize its traffic over any other device, and since it "owns" the interrupt, any other device will fight for that interrupt when trying to use the channel.

I just ordered a USB hub (4 additional high speed ports) from Gateway for about $25 plus shipping which they guarantee will solve the problem. (Yes, I know I probably could have gotten it cheaper, but since it's there machine, I know it will fit and is returnable if it doesn't work for me.) Thanks again!

Any USB hub will work with the machine. The Gateway hub is a repacked product from most likely Belkin.

Sorry to be the bearer, but I would of just gone to Walmart or Radio Shack and gotten one for plust an Ethernet Card for what you ended up paying for from Gateway.

Well, all due respect, but I did ask you where to get one and what it would cost.
