Internet Problems

I have Windows XP and have been using IE 6.0 for some time and all of a sudden I can't get the Hotmail website or connect to AIM. Also, when I perform some searches it tells me the page cannot be displayed. The only change I recently made was upgrading Norton Internet Security from 2002 to 2005. Although, that was about four weeks ago and the problem just started a few days ago. And it happens even if I turn NIS off. I also have Adware 6.0 installed and have run Spybot S&D. THe only thing that shows up is DSO Exploit which from what I read on your website shows up even if it has been removed. I have tried removing it by editing my registry but the values are changed already.
My computer was custom built by a friend in my old companies IT dept. So it is very frustrating not to have any type of support and not know how to fix something.
