Our local cable company has a offer right now for a 5mb connection for $9.99 a month for 1 year and then $49.95 after that.

I am leaving my 1mb DSL with Bellsouth tomorrow, I am going to love the 5mb. I used to have a 3mb with the cable company but had problems since I have moved I should be ok.

I will buy my own cable modem this time instead of paying $5.00 a month rental for one. :D

Yeah, lol! I called and made sure there were no "catches" before I swicted over. They claimed no catches, no contract, just let them know and they would add it to my account.

Ehhh... sounds a little too good, but my ISP is good (not that great), and they're cheap.

    So good luck.

Damn . . . sounds like a sweet deal. I'd expect my PC to see me coming and already displaying whatever I needed that day . . . lol

My options are but a fraction of that

    I hate all you people...

Burning Monkey runs away to cry in the corner

I can only get dial up in my area and it is limited to 26.4k at the best and more often than not it is 24.0k

But that does sound like a very good deal.

Dang! Must suck to be you, then. :p Guess there's not much service way out thar in those cornfields.

@ B.J.:- Sounds sweet, especially for the first year. And if there are no contracts, then there is presumably nothing to loose. It's getting pretty competitive out there in the broadband provider game. Starting to get some decent deals in this part of the world too, but not that good, LoL! ;)

    Not much service at all.

Doesn't help that I have old solid copper phone lines with lead shielding either. Qwest refuses to upgrade my phone lines since they don't want to deal with the lead.

Population base doesn't warrant getting cable either. Gotta love bottom lines and profit margin. (not that I blame the cable companies)

Yeah, if Bellsouth would give me at least a 3meg speed I would stay but they won't go higher for some reason. As soon as I connect the cable modem, Bellsouth will call and offer me a 3meg server you watch! lol

I remember when I had dialup, I actually used to do what I do now using dialup (post in forums, download junk everyday, etc; ). When I found out high speed internet was coming we thru a party, I'm serious. lol

Hell...I used to gear everything up before I left for work at 5:00 in the morning, then just let'er run all day....and pray to god it was done when I got home!!!!

I was tickled pink when I found out I could get 1.5mb DSL for 30.00/month...and I jumped on immediately, and man was I smokin' at 700 down and 300 up!! Then I moved to a new subdivision that for some reason SBC didn't see the need to provide DSL for over 4,000 homes in one subdivision, so I moved over to 8mb comcast, and I'm still in awe, occasionally!!

I remember when I switched to DSL back in 1999. 6 month waiting list. Cheapest price for 1.2 Mb was $75 a month. Though, the local telephone service had it for $100 a month.

But, once I got it wow! Those napster downloads were awesome. ;)
    Got Cable now. (8Mb/s) :)

@Burning_Monkey: Have you thought of satellite internet? My parents live in the country. They use sat tv (love it), and use sat internet (love it also). Sat Ping times sux (aout 1 second (avg 1200 ms)), but overall is quite fast. Except during heavy clouds, rain, snow fall, iced over sat dish.... :)

I've been looking for what I call "decent" bandwidth.

I've been looking at getting a couple of ADSL lines into a house and then doing some load balancing (since I'm quickly becoming experienced in that).

I'll soon be putting out an ad looking for "fellow geeks who like bandwidth" somewhere.

Load balancing is great. Hard to do, at a home location, cheaply. :)

I got some better news today, not only do I get the 5 meg service for $9.95 a month for a year, I was informed today when I paid my bill that after the year it only goes to $29.95 for 5 megs!!! I was like, are you serious?

They offered me 10 megs for $59.95 a month but I am going to stick with the 5 for a month or so to see how it works.
