i am currently using firefox and for some reason my internet speed has died. i mean downloading i get normal speeds but when just browsing on the net, it seems to take forever to load up web pages. i haven't changed any settings recently.
security i use is sygate firewall, avg free, spyware doctor, windows defender. i do weekly scans using adaware se, spybot, registry mechanic, crap cleaner and tune up utilities 2006, and defrag my hard drive every now and again.

my connection went down for a day the other day but since getting it back on its been like this.

    any ideas?

    thanks all

    Hi

    Whats your ISP?

Also do you know if your ISP has been updating their equipment at the phone excahnge?

I have been sufferning similar for two weeks since Orange decided to change all their connections to LLU ( Local Loop Unbundling ), I would be calling or emailing your ISP so that they can check not only your phoneline but their settings at the exchange.

What you could also do is to flush the DNS cache on your PC as sometimes it can have some corrupted entries in it and this can cause slow or none loading pages.

Open a Command Window ( Start > Run and type CMD and hit enter ) then type or paste this ipconfig /flushdns then try the net again.

You'll need to get back onto Orange as many are having similar issues, I know of two reletives of mine who get one minute, 3000kb/s next they are at 12kb/s, they will try to blame BT but as thye are the supplier to use th ecustomer they need to fix this as I can bet yours went worse after the upgrade date? you should have had an email from Orange last year on the date they were upgrading your exchange to LLU, mine was Jan 15th and ever since then speeds are patchy and as you say downloads are OK, but surfing pages they are slow, and I have tested 4 different web browsers and all are the same, plus I know its not our end or PCs as me speed were fine before the upgrade.

Line tests are useless in this instance as its not the line thats the problem its the exchange equipment or settings they have used.

i must say, orange are the worst isp ever. it was fine when it was wanadoo - good customer service, reliable connection etc. then along comes oranges and buys them out and f**ks it all up. can never get through to them if you have a problem. i have spent 45 minutes on hold before now and still didn't get through.

i give up with them. i am changing to sky broadband in a couple of weeks - up to 8 meg but 40gb limit which will do me - for £5 a month !!

orange can go shove their customer service up their asses.
