Internet/Trend Micro popup problem

    Hey

So approximately a month ago, I had virus/malware problems and followed cleanup procedures listed in the malware support forum, posted logs, and got everything fixed. Afterward I noticed I was in Selective Startup and switched to Normal Startup and started having lots of new programs load with computer startup and some internet problems. I used a startup manager and cleaned things up as best I could and also used smart defrag after that.

Now, I often have very slow internet problems and most annoyingly, everytime I access a new page of the internet or do anything on the internet, Trend Micro PCcillin Internet Security 14 will popup in the bottom right corner about every 10 seconds saying "The Web site you are accessing cannot be rated. A server or connection error occurred. Check your Internet connection, and then try again." My internet is slow when Trend Micro starts popping up that notification, and I have no idea why it is doing that. It will do it visiting normal sites like google and even after I close my browser it will popup several times. (I have Windows XP Media Center Edition.)

I am sorry for the lengthy yet possibly vague description of my problem. However, if someone could provide some assistance, I would certainly appreciate it.

    Thanks!

What startup manager? Perhaps you turned off something at startup that needs to be turned on.

Are you running Trend Micro? You may not have it set up properly.

It was just called "Startup Manager" by TimW (Malware Expert). It says the company is ExtraMile Software. This is the link I downloaded it from. http://www.majorgeeks.com/StartUp_d4436.html
    It says |MG| StartUp 1.3.

Yes, I use Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14. Before malware removal and the switch to normal startup mode, I didn't have this problem of that popup alert and slow internet. I think it was the switch to normal startup mode when i had several problems with new software running on my system and also starting up with my computer and trend micro popping up every 10 seconds and slow internet.

    Thanks for your reply.

stanly, he has a slow computer - at this point we don't want him to add yet another app to bog down his system. He has been through malware removal and his computer is clean.
From looking at the malware thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=180790
you never asked for help on what should be running at startup.
Please start listing what is showing as running at startup.
Just post a txt file of names.

Yeah, I don't have any malware or spyware problems. My main problem is the Trend Micro popping up every 10 seconds saying "The Web site you are accessing cannot be rated. A server or connection error occurred. Check your Internet connection, and then try again."

I did post for help in the thread in the link below..I guess I didn't finish getting help since I didn't respond after that last post, but I forgot about that thread for a while and thought I had fixed it after removing some of those things from Startup.

My computer is not always slow; it is just randomly slow about half the time and fine the other half. The internet seems to slow up significantly when Trend Micro starts repeatedly popping up.

    Thanks

    1. The first item says Trend Micro Anti-Spam for OE monitor
If your computer is checking for email every 10 minutes, that might be why this is popping up.
I'd turn it off and see if the popups stop. If they do, you've found the problem. If they don't enable it again.
    2. C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe"
First you are running an outdated version of Adobe Reader which does have security holes and second, don't let Adobe check for updates.
My advice, remove (using add/remove program in control panel) version 7 of Adobe Reader and install version 9.
    3. C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
Turn off TeaTimer - please. That alone can bring a computer to its knees. Run Spybot but not TeaTimer.
    4. C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSDrvCheck.exe -CheckReg
You don't need Pinnacle constantly checking for updated drivers; disable this.
    5. C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWTray.exe
I uninstalled this years ago. You have TrendMicro and SpyBot, I don't think you need AdAware using more cpu cycles too.

    Hey

    1. So I used the Startup Manager to uncheck Trend Micro OE monitor. I will see if that fixes the problem.
    2. I uninstalled Adobe Reader 7 and installed version 9, but I noticed after restarting my pc the adobe reader 7 update manager still showed up on the list (checked) in the startup manager. I unchecked it anyway, but I'm not sure why it still shows up in the startup manager. ??
    3. I opened up Spybot (in advanced mode) and went to tools and clicked on 'Resident' and unchecked both 'SDHelper' and 'TeaTimer'. What is SDHelper? Should I have unchecked it along with TeaTimer?
    4. I also used the Startup Manager and unchecked the Pinnacle update drivers-check item.
    5. I uninstalled Ad-Aware.

    Thanks for your advice.

Adobe doesn't always remove everything. Let me see if I can track down some sort of cleanup tool.
Note: the cleanup tool might also remove Adobe 9 in which case you would need to reinstall it.

As far as Spybot, I think it is safe to let SDHelper run. I do not use Spybot and I usually only read things about TeaTimer being a resource hog.

    Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Install this then run it. You will then get a list of every program that used the windows installer to install on your computer. If Adobe Reader 7 is in the list, select only that and click cleanup. Then reboot. If only Adobe Reader is listed, then it will clear out everything with all versions of Adobe Reader so you will need to reinstall version 9 after you reboot.

    Hey Plodr

A ran the Windows Installer Utility and it shows " Acrobat.com", "Adobe AIR", and "Adobe Reader 9." Those are what came with the latest version of Adobe Reader 9. It does not list Adobe Reader generically or specifically as version 7.

Also, I guess the Trend Micro OE monitor is not the cause of the Trend Micro popups/alerts because I still got that popup now a few times after I unchecked it with the Startup manager. So I guess I will check it back as per your suggestion

    ...

    Thanks

Yup, put TrendMicro back to enabled.
Do a search for Adobe*.* You should see at least one entry for Adobe 7 since it is still listed somewhere in startup. Write down the exact path then go there using windows explorer and delete it.

    If you still see
from TrendMicro while you are searching, it almost sounds like you have something in PCcillin that is expecting a safe or unsafe rating. If I were you, I'd look through all the settings and see if you have something for rating a site and it is either checked or unchecked. Change the setting to the opposite, close your browser then fire up the browser again and see what happens.

Has your internet speed improved at all?

    Hey Plodr

I am sorry it has been so long since I have replied to your last post helping me out.

I did re-enable that Trend Micro OE monitor on startup.

I did that search for Adobe but i found no entries for Adobe 7...?

My internet has been working pretty fairly and it works ok when I don't get that pop up from Trend Micro..but still every once in a while it will pop up for a little while and that is when my internet halts. I looked through all my settings and nothing stood out to me that seemed like it was rating a website that I should check or uncheck it.

I will look through the settings again. Any other adivce or help?

    Thanks for your assistance.

Hi dgbarger, I just happened onto your thread here.. I am also using Trend Micro PC-Cillin 14, and a Dell computer, and my OE checks for mail every 10 minutes too. I am not having the same problem that you are...

Have you double-checked the settings in the console?

Click the "Network Security" on the left, and then the "Personal Firewall" .
See what is checked there. If you are using Windows Firewall, you will want to dis-able the firewall in Trend Micro. I am on a dial-up connection, so I clicked "Home Network". I just wonder if you now have two firewalls turned on.. Simple enough to fix.... ;)

    Hey TeeCee

When I click "Personal Firewall" under Trend Micro Network security, I get a notification stating:

"Unable to read the configuration. Restart your computer and try again. If the issue persists, consult the Online Help > Problem Solving section for instructions. (error=5428-304, hr=0x80040201)"

This doesn't seem to be correct...ha. Maybe this is the root of my problem (whatever it is)? I am guessing I should now consult Trend Micro Online Help.

    hi dgbarger,

I think at this point, I would consult Trend Micro on that... You should be able to access the Personal Firewall. I am also wondering if anything is clicked in the "Wi Fi Intrusion Detection" .... Mine is totally unchecked, but I am on a dial-up connection.......You should have access to the entire console..Another thing, have you googled that error#? I did, and am seeing a lot of OE problems associated with that error......Hmmmmm :confused I think at this point, to contact Trend Micro, and that will be a start.. I have found they know that software much better than me.. I do however, think that is the root of your problem, and they will direct you as to what to click to fix it... It is simple to them ;)
Do keep us posted, and check back; we are always interested.

Maybe someone else with more experience will be able to help you further....
    Hang in there, :)

Here is an update on my problem.

I chatted online with an agent for Trend Micro.
http://esupport.trendmicro.com/consumer/assistance.aspx Anyone can click on chat..enter in some general information such as your name, the version of Trend Micro you have, and a description/classification of your problem. Then you log onto a chat session with an agent as they help you out.

The agent I chatted with ended up having me completely uninstall my version of Trend Micro and gave me a link to click on afterward and install a free update/upgrade version of Trend Micro.

Since my problem with the Trend Micro problem pop-up was random, I will just continue using my internet and see if I run into the problem now..but I'm hoping I don't and I'm not expecting it to happen again.

Thanks Plodr for your help and TeeCee for your suggestions as well.

(Also, when I installed the new Trend Micro it forced an uninstall of SpyBot in order to install itself.. I will probably just reinstall spybot.)

Hello dgbarger, you are welcome. What version of Trend Micro did you get? Also, you may not need " SpyBot" now if you have a newer version... Just give it a whirl without SpyBot, and see how things go.. I don't use SpyBot either.... The Trend Micro PC Cillin 14 does scan for all sorts of things anyway... Glad to hear it went well for you, and yes, I was wondering myself. :-D

    Thanks for the update! ;)

I actually already reinstalled Spybot. Oh well.

The version of Trend Micro I uninstalled was Trend Micro PCcillin Internet Security 14. The version they had me install just says Trend Micro Internet Security.

Hi dgbarger, yes, I am sure that is an updated version... When I went into their site, I didn't see any "14" for sale, just the one you have.. I hope it is working fine for you? Good to hear from you ! ;)

Hey, dgbarger, if you are still here, I too had to switch from Trend Micro PC-Cillin 14 to Trend Micro Internet Security 16.6...

They sent me an e-mail, informing me that they were no longer going to support the V.14, so I also got upgraded to TM 16.6. This is a really nice piece of software... How do you like yours? I am really enjoying mine, as it sure does seem like a very nice upgrade from the V.14. NICE!;)
