My first thought would be your modem fail to power up due to some power saving feature or or a windows service failed to intialise, could you give a little more detail as to what exactly happens,do the browsers run you can check by cnt alt del and looking for the browser,I could keep guessing but a little more info would be helpful :)

Apparently this a common phenomenon when I had that problem with my gf's Dell Inspiron. As it's usually hooked to AC power, I just killed the standby option in Power options. Perhaps on yours, there may be a setting to make sure to reinitialize your wireless modem.

    ok, here's some more detail:

i'm on a LAN in student accommodation, when i return from standby and try to access the internet (i use firefox and IE7) the browser windows load ok but no pages load. I dont get an error saying the page cant be found, it just tries to load forever. maybe i'd get that message eventually, i just havent waited that long.

ugh looks like a netwroking problem then, try going into control panel after you'v returned from standby, control panel, network connections right click your connection and enable,or disable and them enable check the lan is running and connected then try the internet again?

When the internet is not working, open a command window and type 'ipconfig /all' (without quotes) and post the output here.
