IOBit Smart Defrag is Nagware

IOBit SMart Defrag is one of those crummy, annnoying software programs that once installed, forces itself into your startup entries, even if you disabled that setting in the software's settings dialogue. If you try to disable that installation, it immediately closes the software so that you can't use it.
The gui of the software is filled with all of these irritating little advertisements suggesting that you send the same software to your unsuspecting buddies as a "gift".
I wouldn't mind the built in advertisements if the software wasn't dishonest... I mean by that, if I choose on a software program not to add certain automatic options, I expect these not to be added. :(
This is the kind of software that turns people off of the internet and trial software in general. I know that if I see IOBit associated with any software in the future... I will not install it.

    Too bad.

Defragging is more or less pointless on NT systems anyway (as a performance boost).

It ~*may*~ prolong the life of your harddrive though, but I don't think I need 3rd party for a maybe.

I posted last week that this program can also remove some of your pc startup processes if you uninstall it. This is totally unacceptable. An unsavvy user wouldnt necessarily know how to restore those startup items. I got rid of IObit and switched to Auslogics defragger. I can relate to the thread's author's complaint.

And I just listed today's revision on http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139461

    Thanks for the headsup.:cool

MG list it as Freeware, certainly not Nagware (or Adware). I prefer to run defraggers (when all other programs are closed) when I want to.

Too old fashioned to let defraggers run when they like (in the background). ;)

I'm with you 100%. I never really saw the appeal of IOBit's defrag and it never seemed to do that good of a job anyway.

dionisiog, I use two small, free programs from Mike Lin called Startup Monitor and Startup Control Panel. I can check or uncheck a startup item so I control what the program does. That fact that it would allow me to stop Real Player and Quicktime from launching at startup and sitting in my tray, sold me on both those programs.

If I don't like a startup item, I rip it out of the registry.

Likewise, if I need to defrag, I use the built in defragger.

To be honest, I've not seen one iota of performance difference between the windows defrag and third party.

I think everyone can agree that 3rd party defraggers do it faster, though.

I'm generally a big fan of Keep It Simple Sweetheart.

Windows defragger works fine and it is already there.
3rd party software is just another potential complication, lots of great programs out there but not all of them are necessary.

As Adrynalyne mentioned a lot of them will be faster, but it depends on how often you defrag as to whether that is really an issue.

the main reason I use the Auslogics defragger is because the first itme I ever did, I out of curiosity defragged my computer with the Windows defragging utility before using Auslogics... and Auslogics found another 15% or so to defrag.

But if you don't uninstall and reinstall as much an often as I do, then you probably don't need it. :)

I have found in the past that by doing instantaneous repeats with pretty much any defragger

    ie: Windows -Windows -Windows

or: Auslogics - Auslogics - Auslogics

that they will find a little bit more to defragment every time (up to a point I would imagine)

Gotta say 15% is impressive though :)

I am quite the opposite :D; I prefer my defragmenter to run in the background and automatically defrag (when there are free resources) if it thinks it's necessary. It uses barely any system resources anyway. I like it because it's one boring task -defragging 3 drives manually or on a schedule- eliminated from my worklist. Also has the side benefit of keeping drives clean most of the time.

But this is merely my opinion, and everyone has his own preferences so cheers, mate :drink

Windows defragger is actually a third party defragger, a very lite version, of if i remember right diskeeper, I also think its impossible to defrag a program while it is running, thats my thoughts on back ground defragging, I agree with Bazza, defrag with everything shut down. ed

    For 2K/XP, it is.

So was the CD burning software in XP.
