I'd like to know how to change your IP address either to a specified one or a random one. A program capable of doing this would be apreciated but knowing how to do this manually would be much better.

I understand connecting to a proxy server could do this, but I don't believe the IP is completely changed. I've also heard that it's impossible to completely change or "mask" your IP, and that it remains fundamentally the same even if you change it.

I am using Windows XP SP2 and my connection is through a router.

    Thanks for any help

You can't change your IP. Your IP is assigned to your by your ISP and they can only assign you IP's which they've bought or leased themselves. So I suppose if you really want and you got some deep (extremely deep, be a millionair before considering this) you could buy some IP's of your own.

Otherwise some ISP's simply give you an IP from their pool of IP's whenever you connect. So sometimes if you unplug your cable modem and reconnect you'll get a new IP. However, in my experience there are few ISP's who still do that. But it really depends on your area, and even if it works you'll always be recieving IP's from the same pool of IP's, meaning only the last octet or maybe the last two octets will change.

Alternatively you can use proxy and get an IP from just about anywheres, of course you'll just be getting random IP's. You won't be able to search for a proxy which uses a certain IP, you'd have to take what you can find.

Now all that being said, you can of course use whatever IP you want on a local LAN. In case that is what you meant. All of the above is only relevant if you're planning to go online with it.

I've been researching and I've found that I may be able to allocate an IP using DHCP with "ipconfig" command prompt. My questions is if DHCP assigns you an IP within the IP pool owned by the ISP, or a custom one.

To specify I have a cable connection, so my IP is dynamic, and I would be using the IP online.

    Thanks again

Hmmmm... it seems it hasn't changed, is that because I'm connecting through a router?

However, I have noticed that it does change on other occaisions, so it may only renew my IP every 24 hours or so.

Yea but like Coco says your IP is allocated by your IPS.

If you have a router, common behaviour is that the router siezes the IP from the ISP and then allocates DHCP IPs based on the private network range - 192.168.x.y.

You very well may be on DHCP but there is any number of things your ISP can do. They may allocate you the same IP based on your logon credentials each time you connect changing it periodically.
Or... it may just have a pool of free ones allocated on a first-come basis... either way, it isn't likely to be radically different as your ISP is only going to have a finite number.

I think you need to understand WHAT your IP address is used for. It is used for all communication between your computer and the internet.
I'm sure there are ways to hide this to appear to be someone else, but at the end of the day, your computer has to be able to receive responses from the requests it makes, and these responses will go to your IP address...

Alright then... so I suppose my best bet would be proxies.

    Thanks alot
