I want to know if your IP address changes when you either:

    1. change your ISP

    and/or

    2. get a new computer

In other words, what's it really tied to? Your internet service provider or your computer?

It is not tied to your hardware. Unless you pay for internet service that includes a static IP, your IP address could change for reasons as simple as:

    1. The DHCP lease time for your current, dynamic IP has expired-- you may or may not get a different IP upon its automatic renewal.

    2. AC power to your modem went out for a few minutes-- your modem negotiates a new connection upon power restoration, and you get a different IP.

If you have internet service with a static IP and switch internet providers, unlike telephone numbers, you will not be able to get the same IP from a different provider.

There are so many scenarios that there is No solid answer.

May be if you tell us what is functionally on your mind it will be easy to answer.

Actually, even a power outage may not change your IP: mine hasn't changed for over a year. It depends on your ISP. It will certainly change if you change ISPS. AOL uses a weird proxy system that means that every connection and every web page could ahve a different IP.

Actually doug, your ip address can be tied to the mac address on your pc, or dsl/cable modem. All depends on how the isp hands out ip's.
