Sure. Disconnect, hang up. Reconnect, or dial in again. Voila!

If you are on dial up or DSL using PPPoE, chances are, you'll get a different IP address every session.

If you are on cablemodem, or have DSL using what is called "bridged mode", you might have the same IP for years, unless you power off your modem for several hours.

Point being, your ISP assigns your IP address-- it's not a setting in your computer, unless you are talking about IP addresses of your home LAN..

unless your talking about on a network. then you can change ir pending on how your network is setup

pretty much what TheDoug said, except some ISP's assign static IP's to their customers, in which case you can do nothing except hope your ISP changes them soon.

One way to hide your IP address is to use a program like Ghost Surf Platinum. It has a number of nice features, including the ability to route all your internet access through Tenebril's (the company that makes Ghost Surf) anonymous hubs which hides your own IP address. Before I started using Ghost Surf I wondered if using the anonymous hub feature wouldn't noticeably slow down my web surfing and IM programs, but I've been using it for several weeks now with the privacy level set to "Invisible" and I haven't noticed any difference in speed when surfing or chatting on my 56K connection. Downloads may be a bit slower, but I'm not certain about that and even if that's so it's not a great deal slower and that's a fair tradeoff in my book.

Ghost Surf also what appears to be very good anti-spyware features. It's a bit pricey though -- I think it usually sells for around $50 but I found it on sale for $20!

Curious to know if anyone else here is using Ghost Surf Plat 2005 and if they've had any problems with it or noticed any slow down using the anonymous hubs or are aware of any other drawbacks to using it?

usually, if you are on 56k, your ip is at the mercy of the almighty isp. on dsl, you might come across a bridged setup as described earlier. on my sbc PPPoE connection (dsl) My ip is leased to me every day. so they change it once a day, time depending on what time i logged in on that morning. On RAS (singapore only), your ip is static. no way of changing it. on Heartbeat signal however (australia only), it changes every time you connect. so it really depends on what service you have, and where you are in the world. also, i am behind a router right now, and i have administrator priveleges, so i can change my IP address whenever i want. but if someone was really determined to get the ip that your ISP leased you, then they probrably would get it.
