Ip Config. Problem

Discussion in 'Software' started by HumbleServant1611, Jan 25, 2018.

  1. Hello Geeks,

I am working on a computer, where I recently installed a clean version of Windows 7 SP1 x64. I downloaded all the necessary drivers and installed the 204 updates from Windows Updates. After this I am returning to the "Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet" driver issue. I am not the greatest with networking problems so you are where I come to get the details.

I have done CMD ipconfig /release and /renew with no resolve. Here is an image of the troubleshooter and the Command lines. Let me know if you need anymore information.

P.S. IP address and IPv4 were removed from the image for security purposes

    Thanks

The troubleshooter is telling you what the problem is. You will need to open up the IPv4 properties and post screenshots for us to see where you are going wrong. It is a wired connection you want, not wireless?

There is no security risk with IPv4 settings.

Hard to troubleshoot an "invalid IP" when you erased it..lol. What is the IP? 169.x.x.x?? If you are behind a router with a private IP range, there is no reason not to post it.. so any 169, 192, or 10.x.x.x IP ranges are safe to post. Anyway can you ping the gateway?

Try right click the (mine is wireless) connection, and open Network and sharing centre- look at connections- double click connection-click diagnose.
Let it run and it should give you back the network address- I have done this many times, in cases like yours.

  5. I will be doing the suggestions that were posted above tomorrow when I am back onsite with the computer. I am trying to get a wired connection and thanks for the info. about privacy concerns.

    Thanks

  6. Here's the Command Line information that was requested. config.PNG

Yes I can ping the Gateway and the IP Address.

Clicking on the troubleshooting does not appear to work, whereas, if using the wireless/ethernet connection icon (on taskbar), right click, -open network and sharing centre, and then left clicking the actual connection, and clicking the diagnose button, and letting it , it fixes mine, and renews an ip4 connection.
Perhaps yours is a different problem.

  8. Yeah I tried that and that didn’t work. Command Line was my second thought. Still no luck as seen in the image above.

What does device manager say about the adapter?

Disable the wireless adapter and open the properties of the LAN adapter. Set it to obtain IP address and DNS automatically and see how it goes. You can't resolve this all the while the wireless adapter is connected.

Yep, ping google.com does it work? ping 216.239.38.120 does it work?
post the ipconfig /all if you can't ping google.com but can ping the IP then you have a DNS issue.
You can also type ipconfig /all > ip.txt to put all the info in a text file. Looks like yours defaults to sytem32 folder.

  12. Here is an attached image. LAN Adapter.PNG
I set the LAN adapter to obtain IP and DNS automatically and nothing.
Here are the results of the pinging and an .txt file on the ipconfig /all as requested ping.PNG google.PNG

All this was done with the wireless adapter disabled.

One possibility is that the LAN cable is not making a good connection with the router. Losing two of four pings suggests that to be the case. Try a new, or at least different Ethernet cable.

Sorry for delay responding, been a bit under the weather for a few days.

Or try different Ethernet ports on router and/or computer.

This type of issue has almost become a specialty of mine, though definitely not because of any enjoyment derived from troubleshooting it. The first thing I usually want to know is if any other devices in the house are able to connect to the internet, and if so, are they wired or wireless? Is there any device you can wire into the router just as a test to see if its both computers or just the Windows 7 one? Although this is far from the extent of troubleshooting connection issues, I have a feeling it may be a physical issue with the set up... just a hunch.

If not, try disabling then re-enabling the Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit adapter by righ-clicking on it in the Device Manager. Also, while you're here, look for a Power Management tab under the properties of the Gigabit adapter ... which contains an option ''Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'... and if you find this option, uncheck the box next to it.

More than likely, disabling and re-enabling the adapter isn't going to resolve the issue, so you may want to try uninstalling the device. I know that sounds like something that would give you an anxiety attack, but after uninstalling it, a simple reboot will re-install the default Windows driver for that adapter. It's possible the driver was corrupted which would render the device unusable.

Finally, if that doesn't work, you can try the following commands in an administrative command prompt. If you search for cmd you should see the command prompt at the top of the search results. I think you should be able to right-click on that and Run as Administrator. Once you're sitting at the C:/ prompt (any directory path is fine) type the following commands:

netsh winsock reset - then hit enter, but don't reboot the system yet. Type the next command shown below.
netsh int ip reset - several sections will indicate they have been 'reset - OK!' and ... there may be a few at the bottom that give you an error stating 'access denied'. Don't worry about those... just reboot the system.

These are just a few of the steps I would suggest to start out, but if the issue persists, more information may be needed before advising the next course of action.

  16. I will give the above a try when I return to the customers house. She has a wireless connection right now so she is content.

    Thanks

Ha... as embarrassing as this is to admit... I've struggled with a wireless connection for a good 45 minutes... before finally realizing... laptops often have a function key or button on the side to toggle on/off wireless capability.

I would have suggested you start with that... if I had not already given you a huge list of other troubleshooting steps first. Rookie move... first rule of troubleshooting: start with the simplest thing first. Is it plugged in?! Or... in your case... is the wireless turned on?

If it IS, indeed, a laptop, and there is no obvious button on the side, look on your keyboard for an Fn key. If it has that, then check the F1 - F12 keys to see if any of them have that wifi symbol on them. Usually, it would be as easy as that... Fn + the corresponding F1 - F12 key. I have, however... come across some laptops that I actually had to look up on the internet just to determine what the key combination was... to toggle the wifi on and off.

Honestly, I hope this doesn't turn out to be the resolution... after I've given extensive instructions focused towards a much more complex issue. :/ haha.

Good luck, and at this point, I'm sure you've already taken care of the problem since it's 3 weeks after your last post (lol).
